Vivian Banks Charter School Weekly Update - January 27, 2023

Principal's Message
Dear VBCS Families,
This past week VBCS students and staff participated in the Great Kindness Challenge! The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible on campus. Using the provided checklist of 50 kind acts, students accepted the challenge and showed each other that KINDNESS MATTERS! During the week, students participated in multiple acts of kindness as well as spirit days. Some examples included a Kindness Station, Positive Chalk Affirmations, and a Spirit Day. This is an excellent reminder that we can all make a difference. With all that is happening in the world today, we can all use a little more kindness.
Students of the Week
The following students were recognized at Friday Flag Raising as our Students of the Week. They were selected by their classroom teachers for demonstrating outstanding effort and citizenship for the week. Keep up the great work Eagles!
Eagle Ticket Winners
Every Monday morning we draw an Eagle Ticket winner from each classroom. Students earn Eagle Tickets by demonstrating appropriate behaviors on campus. Students who are selected are recognized on our office Eagle Board.

Counselor's Corner
Why does kindness matter?
We have all heard that it is better to give than receive. Research supports this idea. Kindness improves our well-being and reduces stress. Kindness has been found to add years to our lives. Simple acts of kindness improve the following:
- Help others feel good.
- Creates a sense of belonging and reduces isolation.
- Helps others and you have a positive outlook on life.
- Improves the world. One act of kindness encourages others to show acts of kindness to others.
- The more you do for others, the more you do for yourself. Thinking of others has been proven to increase self-esteem.
I would like to encourage everyone to commit to kindness. Ask yourself, how can I show kindness to everyone? How can I let go of any past hurts or misunderstandings? How can I treat others the way I want to be treated? People often complain about being bullied or others being mean to them, but forget to focus on what they can control... It would be time well spent focusing on how I can improve the lives of everyone around me.
Here are a couple read-alouds on kindness.

Health and Saftey
Free Covid-19 Tests
In an effort to support the health and safety of our learning communities, the State of California has provided no-cost, at-home Covid-19 antigen test kits for families with students enrolled in Bonsall Unified School District. These tests are meant to assist you with quickly determining if your student may have COVID-19.
These at-home test kits can offer a safe, quick, and convenient way for students to monitor their health and help to reduce transmission. Test kits are available and can be ascertained at your student(s) school office.
We strongly encourage families to use the kits to test their children and report positive results to their school site. The results are important because they will allow us to proactively keep our students safe and our schools open for teaching and learning.
Thank you for your continued support and helping us keep our school communities healthy and safe.
Panorama Survey
This year, your school partnered with Panorama Education to survey staff/families/students at your school about your experiences and perceptions 3x per year. Your participation is completely confidential and anonymous, which means that no one at your school will ever see your individual responses. We (Panorama Education) are managing this process to ensure security.
The results of this survey will help administrators better understand your perceptions of your school. Survey data will be used by your administrators to identify strengths and areas for growth. You may use a computer, tablet, or smartphone to access the survey.
