Seniors
March is the start of the wrapping up process for seniors. As you hear decisions from colleges, remember, if they don't admit you, that is a "Redirection". That college wasn't right for you and you are being redirected to a college that is the right fit for you. You are not being "rejected", just "redirected". Here is a checklist to help you remember some of the things you may need to do:
1) If you haven't, complete the FAFSA application. Get started at fafsa.gov
2) As you hear back from colleges, update the admission decisions in Naviance. You won't be able to delete colleges that you never applied to but here are directions for updating college results in Naviance (in case you don't know how to do this.)
3) Planning on Community College? Check out the upcoming Application Workshops. These fall applications normally don't open up for the public until May 1, but if you come to our workshop you can apply now.
3/13 @ 2:45 pm - Foothill College
3/16 @ 1:45 pm - De Anza College
4) Not planning on going to college at this time? Maybe you are interested in going into a trade but you aren't 18 yet? The Trades Orientation Program (TOP) is a great way to learn what it takes to successfully apply to become a working apprentice in the trade of your choice. The information session for the 2023 Cohort is taking signups. To reserve a spot at an orientation/application session, interested applicants can visit www.wpusa.org/top. Orientation will be held via Zoom.
Juniors
Now is a good time to start compiling a list of colleges you are thinking about applying to next year. Make sure to add these to your "Colleges I'm Thinking About" list in Naviance. The College Essay Guy has some tips to help get started with that. Here is how he answers the question:
SO WHERE SHOULD I RESEARCH COLLEGES?
Here are a few of his favorite places.
Stay on www.collegexpress.com and type in the school name. Then click “Lists” to see what other lists that school is on. In fact, I’ve linked some of these lists directly at the bottom of this blog post. (Scroll down to see more.)
For the pro perspective, check out the Fiske Guide to Colleges, which is (ask any counselor) the go-to guide for college research. It has great 2-3 page summaries of hundreds of colleges and is a great starting point. Why else should you get this book?
For the student perspective, go to unigo.com where you can read real students’ opinions on their schools. But don’t just read 1-2 reviews, read a bunch of them, in particular the “What’s the stereotype of students at your school?” and “Is the stereotype true?” You’ll get a sense of the school vibe pretty quick.
For virtual campus tours, check out CampusReel.org. While there are tons of other virtual campus tour websites out there, most of them focus on what a campus looks like but precious few websites or tours really let you get a sense of what a college campus feels like.

Do you love the theater? Would you like a job where you are around the theater all day even if you aren't necessarily the one on stage? Check out this 5 minute RoadTrip Nation video about theater jobs: 5 Jobs for People Who Love the Theater. Aside from acting, this video talks about careers such as Playwriter/Screenwriter, Theater Director, Managing Director (for that really organized person), and the newest job; Entertainment Engineer.

And what opportunities for liberation may be unlocked?
Join us for a 3-part online workshop where we will explore the intersections of technology, race, and power, and delve into issues such as biased algorithms and the use of personal data for profit.

College Spotlight
University of Nevada, Reno
University of Nevada-Reno is one of only 2 research institutions in the state of Nevada. They were founded originally in Elko, NV in 1874 and was transferred to Reno 8 years later in 1886. By 1900 the campus had grown to 11 buildings, two student dormitories and a gymnasium. In 1936, University enrollment surpassed the 1,000-student mark.
Fast forward 120 years and the university had a record 5,000 students graduate during the 2019-2020 academic year. The University was chosen as one of just 130 universities by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as an “R1” institution — “very high research activity” — which is reserved for doctoral-granting universities with exceptional levels of research activity. In 2020, it was announced that the University had reached the prestigious Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, becoming one of only 119 institutions in the country so honored. The numerous new buildings are both fashionable and functional for learning, collaborating, and living.
Every freshman is required to attend the NevadaFIT week in August also knows as "bootcamps for Academic Success" where students are taught skills to help them thrive in the rigor of college life and academia. As part of NevadaFIT, each student is given an iPad, keyboard, e-pencil, and a suite of applications they will need.
The Knowledge Center (aka Library) is more than a book storage and study facility. Inside the Knowledge center is the @One Digital Media and Technology Center including @Reality which is a virtual reality lab.
These are a few of the places I saw during my recent visit. The dorms provide FREE laundry to all students and they have approximately 3000 beds so incoming students will want to get an early bid for housing. The variety of dining options is incredible with eateries (i.e. The Habit, Starbucks, Panda Express, etc) located all over campus. The redesigned Downunder Dining Commons has excellent tasting food options.
