Roman Gladiators
Were they heroes or victims?
Heroes
Some were volunteers, wealthy aristocrats in it for the glory. They earned fame and fortune, and they were total chick magnents. Gladiators were at the top of their physical, mental, and emotional game. They feared none, they were gladiators.
Victims
Slaves were victims because they were forced to become gladiators and fight. Most likely, the slave would die because the emperor and people favored the wealthy more. They were forced to fight men and ferocious animals. Also, the crowd of people at the fight got to choose who would be the victor and who would die. It's more of a popularity contest than a fight.
