In Case You Missed It:
Vincent and Anriette Pienaar and our AVID elective students represented us well on Tuesday evening at the LCS AVID Family NIght at the Civic Center. I was very proud our our student speaker, Dillon McBurnett. Our kids were helpful answering questions and sharing all about the AE class at their school.
Kudos to our SanLee Bloggers, under the direction of Robin Neville, for putting together their podcast on AVID at SanLee. WOW! It was amazing to hear from kids not in the AE class on how AVID helps them. I also enjoyed hearing Amy Braren and Bianca DiMarcello's sections on AVID in their classrooms. Thank you for help our kids use their voices to tell our story, Robin!
The school shooting in FL makes us reexamine our procedures to ensure everyone 's safety. Each year LCS administration examines and revises our safety plans, train staff, train and complete required drills with our students. At SanLee we always take threats seriously and expect staff to report to administration anything that seems out of the ordinary immediately. I'm reminding you again to keep windows closed and locked at all times and make sure outside doors are closed behind us and never propped open. Our Systems Team meets monthly to discuss issues and brings suggestions for procedures to make our school safer and run smoother. Report to your Systems representative any suggestions you have to improve our safety. It's important to reflect on how you provide opportunities for kids to report things to you. Whatever your procedures are make sure to these different options of communication to your students, so they know how to report things confidentially. Remind them of our counselor's request form which notifies Nejla and Anna immediately anytime there is a new submission. Friday's incidence was discovered because a student reported what he saw to a staff member, and the staff member reported it to an administrator IMMEDIATELY.
This month's fire drills in Lee County Schools will be announced to staff ahead of time. Teachers will share with students that we will be having a drill. This will hopefully, keep apprehension down during our monthly drill and give everyone a chance to heal from the events in FL before going back to unannounced drills.
We would like to give a HUGE thank you to Tommy Harrington, Christina Reed, and Brianna Simmons for volunteering to drive the bus over the past two weeks. We really wouldn't know what we would have done without their assistance and willingess to do #whateverittakes!
Thank you so much to the following Stallions and friends for helping make the SGLA dance a success! Dr. Andy Bryan, Karen Briggs, Brian and Karen Caldwell, Kevin Degon, Monica and Chasity Hawes, Elizabeth Holland and her husband, Bonnie Marshall, JT Owens, Vincent and Anriette Pienaar, Kim Vaughn, Anna Whalen, Cynthia Wicker, Officer Yanira Scott and the Lee County Sheriff's Department. We raised over $1,000.00 to support this summer's SGLA program!!
Last week was a good week for AVID Elective sign ups. We have had 52 rising 8th graders, 68 rising 7th graders, and 10 rising 6th graders to already apply. Make sure to speak with individual students you feel would benefit from the AE class and give them time to fill the application out. All students that apply will be granted an interview. We have all applications linked on the front page of our website, including those for the high schools.
