Language is extremely important to the Aboriginal peoples.Languages carry culture knowledge, so the loss of languages means to the loss of culture,of Aboriginal people's connectionsto their ancestors "The important thing about languages and what it means is that language countains the essence of our ancestors,every word comes from placeand identities people and links to the land,country,the dreaming they are all inherent in laguage therefore it means the people the land,everything.."yolngo Elder lourie baymarrwangga.

Explain the importance of language to the Aboriginal in your own words

Imagine how you would feel if sa person came up to you and said you are not aloud to speek your own lagguage it would be stealing your culture.


the Aboriginal name for shellharbour has been recorded as both yerrowah(meeting place),and wonwin,(place wherethere are big fish). The Eurpean name shellharbour refers to the large quantities of shells found in Aboriginal middens along the foreshore in the mid 19th century. Due to the mining of shells in mid 19th century for the production of lime these vast middens no longer remain.
