Kindergarten Newsletter ACES
Week Of April 1st
Highlights from last week....
In ELA, we learned about how to get from here to there. We worked on the letters q and w and learned the words here and me.
In Math, we worked on number bonds and number sentences up to 10. We focused on subtracting or "breaking numbers apart" this week. We focused on number stories and worked on writing the sentence and creating a number bond to match the sentence. We also focused on reading number sentences to determine if we should add or subtract the numbers in the sentence.
A peek at our learning this week....
This week our class will be reading stories and learning about our country’s national symbols, monuments, and national parks, such as the American flag, the White House, and the Grand Canyon.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
Word Workout
- Vocabulary: country, travel Talk about places in the United States where you have traveled or would like to visit with your child. Then invite your child to draw a picture of that place.
- My Words to Know
High-Frequency Words: this, what Write the words this and what on paper. Then have your child trace each word. Think of short sentences that include each word and write them down. Have your child point to each word and read the sentences.
Category Words: ordinal numbers Help your child point to and identify each image using ordinal numbers.
Phonics: y, z Help your child think of words with the letter y and the letter z. Give clues to help your child identify the words. Make a list of the words, and then have your child underline the letter y or z in each one.
In Math, we will be working on using multiple strategies to add and subtract within ten. We will practice using drawings, number lines and ten frames to help us.

HOW IS IT APRIL!!!! I am SO excited with the learning that is going on in our classroom. We are reading and writing machines! The kids are developing a real love for reading. Many of my friends spend their time "testing" kids with their letters and sight words and reading during our free choice time! Thank you for all that you do.
