Scopes v. Tennessee
John Scopes is a substitute teacher who was accused of teaching evolution in public schools. He was defended by famed attorney Clarence Darrow. The prosecuting attorney was three time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. The defense argued that the way evolution was taught was not inconsistent with the bible, though this did not go over well with the prosecution and the jury. Ultimately William Jennings Bryan won the case and Scopes was fined $100, but the verdict was overturned due to a technicality. this trial has raised many questions about the ethics of modern science versus religion. It also brings up the issue presence of religion in school and the effect it has on teaching.
