TEEN READ WEEK - OCTOBER 8th-14th
READ FOR THE FUN OF IT - UNLEASH YOUR STORY! FUN BEING THE FOCUS!
As librarians we have a long battle ahead when it comes to teens and reading. Research done by Common Sense Media shows reading rates declining not only as kids get older, but also how large the gap is in the last 30 years. "In 2014, 22% of 13 year olds and 27% of 17 year olds said they “never” or “hardly ever” read for pleasure. Girls tend to dominate pleasure reading with 30% say they read daily to the 18% of boys who do." tasltalks
Library workers who serve teens know the importance of this demographic. Not only are they the adult library users of tomorrow, but young adults need safe spaces staffed with caring adults where they can access resources and get assistance. Pursuing personal interests, completing school assignments or simply exploring new reading materials and digital tools are all reasons teens use their school and public libraries. Let your programming for this week include plenty of fun for students as well as marketing opportunities for your library! (And don't forget to tag me when you TWEET - @MunioLibrarian)
