Curriculum Highlights

Language Arts-Unit 10 has begun! In this unit we will read the story The Spingle Spangle Talent Show. While reading we will practice answering questions about a story, summarizing, and recognizing the plot of the story. We will also learn about contractions, focusing on n't words.


Math-We will finish up Topic 8 this week and move on to Topic 9. In Topic 9 we will compare and order numbers to 120. We will compare numbers that are greater than, less than, and equal. We will practice ordering numbers as well.


Social Studies-Our Patriotic Play preparations are underway! Our lessons throughout the month will identify important American patriots and key American symbols.

Patriotic Play Updates

  • Our Patriotic Play is just around the corner! Please send your child to school on Tuesday, February 23, in their full costume. Additionally, please send your child's MJS uniform with them. The children will change out of their costumes and into their uniform after the performance. All costumes will remain at school for the performance on Wednesday. On Wednesday children will come to school in their school uniform and will change into their costume here.

Happy Valentine's Day!

First grade will celebrate Valentine's Day on Tuesday, February 9. We will celebrate in our classrooms during the day with special crafts, stories, and games. We will also exchange valentine cards. If your child wishes to participate in the valentine card exchange, please be sure that they bring a card for each child in their class. Class lists are posted on the MJS Resource page for reference purposes.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

A few reminders and requests........
  • On February 12, we need 4 more volunteers to assist from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 3 more volunteers to assist from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Anyone able to lend hand should email the Grandparents and Special Friends Day chairs, Nicole Dixon dixon5600@aol.com or Tina Yates Tibanyates@sbcglobal.net
  • Grandparents ans Special Friends Day is an early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m. and there is no extended care available. Please remember to complete the following online form https://www.mayfieldjs.org/podium/default.aspx?t=36644&rid=15723
