Starling: How Challenging
What Would Really Challenge You To Move Forward
Failing & Moving Forward
After realizing I was a failure at Inktober, yet again this year, got me thinking about why we are drawn to this idea of challenges. We do crave responsibility, accountability and have a desire to connect. But, is it useful? In this episode I discuss this idea of challenges, some examples of more open ended creative one and have us think about the structures we develop within. Listen at the link below and then discover content around this topic of how we challenge ourself.
This Week's Quote: Charles Horton Cooley
American Sociologist Charles Horton Cooley came up with The Looking Glass Self concept. Basically this theory says that a person’s self grows out of society’s interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others. This means he thought that people developed themselves around the way other people perceived them, which leads to confirmation of these perceptions held by others.
This theory seems to actually connect to the discussion of this episode, and how we develop in the structures designed by others. Is it even possible to know ourselves separately?
INKTOBER
So this is what I failed at. It really is a fun challenge and a great way to get creative thinking moving. Plus I love seeing my friends, and artists all over the world, make some amazing pieces around the prompts. Perhaps...when the time is right, I will succeed at this one day.
Challenges I Mentioned
Draw It Again Challenge
National Novel Writing Month...November
Have an idea you want to write about? You can plug into this challenge and see if it forces you to finally get things down.
And Just For Kicks...
Here is a silly offshoot of NaNoWrMo...
The Sketchbook Project
This challenged helped me a lot in 2011, when I was going through cancer and dealing with losing my Father. In some ways, If I had not done this challenge, I am not sure I would be creating art or making Starling today...
The 2nd link goes to the digitized version of my sketchbook....it was really naive...and honest.
Create Your Own Structure:
My challenge for you is to create your own art challenge. Don't plug yourself into someone else' developmental structure, learn how to make your own. Build a structure you want to develop within. That is actually the key to always being able to move yourself forward. Learning to take hold of your own development and create guidelines that push your progress.
