Hello WMES Family,
Earning just got easier by going digital, get to know the new mobile app so you can keep earning for our school. It scans your store receipt, automatically finds participating products and instantly adds Box Tops to our school's earnings online. Below is more information and a screenshot of how to credit your earnings to your child's homeroom teacher's name. See example below. If you have clippings to turn in please put them in a Ziploc baggie with the homeroom teacher's name and turn them into the homeroom teacher.
Our 2020 Georgia Picture Book reading program is off to a great start! Our classes are reading, discussing, and writing about these 20 amazing picture book nominees! In the book Drawn Together, written by Minh Le and illustrated by Caldecott award-winning artist Dan Santat, a young boy and his grandfather cross a language and cultural barrier using their shared love of art, fantasy, and storytelling. It is through their drawings that the grandfather and grandson “see each other for the first time.”
December Reading Rewards
December reading logs were sent home with students on Monday, Dec. 2. Students that earned a reading reward for November will receive their reward the week of December 9! In order to meet your monthly goal and receive a reading reward, students must read and log 20 minutes (or more) each day for 20 days during the month. Be sure to fill out the front and back of the log completely to reflect your 20 dates of reading. Parents, be sure to initial each reading date entry on the log. Be sure to continue reading and logging your minutes over the winter holidays!
Students will return their completed December log to their teacher on Monday, January 6, after the winter holiday break. Reading logs for January will go home with students on Monday, Jan. 6. Be sure to look for the blue reading log in your child’s bookbag on this date.
Our students in grades 3-5 will log their reading using the online Reading Rewards website. If you have any questions about this program, please email Jennifer_Alden@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
The character word of the month for December is Caring. Teachers will be looking for students that are caring for others, in big ways and small! Those students showing care towards others will be recognized as the Cub of the Month!
Are you planning a family trip for the holidays? As you think about your arrangements, we want to stress the importance of sending your child to school every day possible. Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after the winter holiday, as families squeeze in a few more vacation days. It’s time to break that cycle. We know that just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is true in every grade.
We recognize that holidays are an important time for reconnecting with families far away. The costs of plane tickets often influence when you want to travel. But please keep in mind the costs to your children’s education if they miss too much school and the message you will be sending about the importance of attendance. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning, right up until vacation starts and the first day back. You can help us convey the message that getting an education is important and not something to be taken for granted. This holiday season; give your children the gift of an education and the habit of good attendance.
