Hello families,

It’s hard to believe that we have completed the first 7 weeks of school! It has been a great start to the school year, and I am very proud of our students and our teachers! Progress reports will be coming home today in Friday Folders. If you have any questions about your child’s progress, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.

Have you been reading and logging your Reading Rewards minutes for September? Our K-2 cubs will record their reading minutes on their blue September paper logs while our students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will use the online Reading Rewards website to log their minutes and review the books that they have read.

The program is designed to encourage and reward our readers for developing and maintaining a consistent habit of independent reading. In order to meet your monthly goal and receive a reading reward, students must read and log 20 minutes (or more) each day for 20 days during the month. K-2 logs are due to the teacher on or before Monday, Sept. 30. Late and/or incomplete logs will not be accepted.

Log your September reading NOW! Let’s make independent reading a habit! We are excited about using this online reading program to grow our Woodward Mill community of readers! If you have any questions about this program, please email Jennifer_Alden@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

Have a great weekend!

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Big picture

According to the Georgia DOE “Data indicates that missing more than five days of school each year, regardless of the cause, begins to impact student academic performance and starts shaping attitudes about school.” Good daily school attendance aligns with our vision, mission and goals for our students. Students who come to school consistently report feeling more connected to their peers and community, develop social skills and friendships, and are more likely to graduate.

We are excited to announce that this year, Woodward Mill will have a Buddy Bench on our playground! A Buddy Bench is a special bench (donated by one of our amazing community partners!) where students can sit if they feel left out at recess. Other students at WMES will then see that student and reach out to include them. We are hoping that this bench will further make the WMES playground a place where every student has fun, has friends, and feels included!
