Hestia

A Greek Goddess

Big image

Who Am I?

HELLO! I am Hestia, the goddess of the hearth (also known as fire), home, architecture, domesticity, family, and the state. I am the first generation of Olympian Goddesses. I am also one of only three virgin goddesses, next to Athena and Artemis. Although both Poseidon and Apollo wanted to marry me, I made an oath to Zeus that I would remain forever pure. All families poured sweet wine in my name and dedicated me the richest portion. The hearth fire was not allowed to go out by any family unless it was ritually extinguished. I may not have had a public cult, but I am always worshiped in any temple, regardless of the god the temple was dedicated to. Also, in Rome, my name is not Hestia, but rather Vesta.

What Do I Look Like?

I am depicted as a bashful woman. Also I am known as a sweet, modestly dressed young goddess. I am often shown wearing a veil.

What About My Personality?

In the eyes of others, I have been seen as a loving woman. I am a kind, forgiving goddess and I have a discrete character. I NEVER leave my residence, the sacred mountain of Olympus and I never participate in any disputes or wars. For this reason, all Olympian gods respect and love me.

My Family

Family

I am the youngest-eldest daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, my parents. Now that might sound funny, but I will explain that to you in a minute. I have five siblings, three brothers Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, and two sisters Hera and Demeter. Also, as I mention again, I never got married.

Do I Have Any Interesting Myths?

I have a very weird myth, and it involves how I was born. I was one of the children to be swallowed by my father. Later, Cronus was tricked into drinking emetic (a medicine or substance that causes vomiting), and vomited my siblings and I out. I was the last to leave my father's stomach. So, in a way, I was both first-born (from Rhea, my mother) and last-born (disgorged from Cronus, my father). For that reason, I am the youngest-eldest child/goddess.
