Eagle Elementary
October 23, 2020
We've had a great first week back from fall break!
Please note the following items:
CoVID testing: Which tests are acceptable? The only negative result that will allow a child/staff member back into school is a PCR. (A negative rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 is not acceptable for a return to school.) More information located below.
Conferences/EDay on November 2nd - Student conferences will be held on Monday, November 2nd. Please note the following important components to the day.
- November 2nd will be an Eday for students. So that teachers will be able to meet with families, content/modules will be published for students to access through Canvas, our learning management system.
- Conferences will be held via Zoom/virtually. Due to mitigation requirements, we can not hold in-person family conferences.
- Conferences will primarily be student-led so that they are given the opportunity to communicate their strengths and areas to strengthen. Student-led conferences align with our ZCS district priorities of student agency and empowerment. Concerns that need to be discussed privately should be ongoing throughout the school year as needs or concerns arise, and communication should remain fluid throughout the year. Please do not hesitate to stay in ongoing communication with your child's teacher.
- Classroom teachers will schedule specific times with families for conferences.
End of Quarter 1 Student Progress Reports (report cards) will be available to families for access in PowerSchool on Tuesday October 27th.
Veterans' Day Celebration - This has always been a major highlight of the school year in Zionsville, and in light of the current CoVID restrictions/pandemic, we will be taking a different approach this year. We will not be hosting a live celebration as we have in years past, but we are working on a way to celebrate our Veterans. Stay tuned for more information.
Picture Retakes - Picture retakes are scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th. Remote students who missed the previous date may come from 8:30-9:00.
Sincerely,
Andrew

Too busy to cook on Election Day? Even if you vote early, please support Eagle and Amore by dining at Amore on Election Day, Nov 3. Check out the video below!
*We wrapped up our Fall Box Tops Label Collection this week. Thank you for all that participated!
*We will announce our results as well as class rankings for our year long Box Tops Competition in the next newsletter!
*Friendly reminder to families to continue to use the Box Top App and scan store receipts and automatically earn cash for our school. Remember you can GIVE CREDIT! Each time you scan a receipt, be sure to look for the star icon in the Box Tops app and give credit to an individual and classroom.
*Keep cutting box tops labels for our next winter collection in February. We will continue to collect unexpired traditional boxtops until they are no longer available.
Thank you to all families who participate in PTO activities to help us raise money for our school. One of the requests we were able to fill was to supply Miss Jackson with equipment for Wellness so that students didn’t have to share equipment with new Covid protocol. We were able to donate over $2,000 to this need. Thank you!

COVID TESTING
There is some new information on our radar which was confirmed through a conversation with the Boone County Health Department this past week. We want families informed so they can make the best decision for your respective family members.
Some COVID tests are not currently accepted by the Department of Health for return to school/work –
- The only negative result that will allow a child/staff member back into school is a PCR. (Per IN Dept of Health and Boone County Health Department, a negative rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 is not acceptable for a return to school.)
- Schools can accept any antigen test if it comes back positive---We will treat as a positive case (Through this process, we will inform you of isolation/quarantine protocols as required by the state and county health departments.)
- If a family/household member has a PCR antigen test that comes back negative and the individual has no symptoms, then no other testing is necessary. Students can return to school.
- If symptomatic and rapid antigen comes back negative then a follow up PCR test is required due to the high rate of false negatives in the rapid antigen test.
Important NOTE: * If an individual has had a close contact with a positive COVID case, a negative test cannot shorten the quarantine period.

Local Trick or Treating Information
Trick-or-Treating in Zionsville
The Town of Zionsville will not be posting official Trick-or-Treat hours this year.
Due to the pandemic and the public health implications of trick-or-treating, the Town of Zionsville is referring people to the Boone County Health Department’s recommendations to observe CDC’s guidelines. The CDC has labeled traditional trick-or-treating (where treats are handed to children who go door to door) as a higher risk activity. The CDC recommends one-way trick-or-treating as a moderate risk activity which includes individually wrapped goodie bags lined up outside (end of the driveway or edge of the yard) for families to grab and go while continuing to social distance (washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after preparing bags).
The CDC lists a number of moderate and lower risk Halloween activities on their website here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays.html#halloween.
If you would like to contact the Boone County Health Department, contact information is posted here: https://boonecounty.in.gov/Offices/health-department.
Whitestown Trick or Treat
Whitestown offered a link with detailed info and also there will be an outdoor trick-or-treat event this Saturday in addition to official trick-or-treat hours from 6-9 p.m. on October 31.

A.L.I.C.E Safety Protocol
Dear Parent/Guardian,
In the coming weeks, our school safety team will speak to students on the topic of school safety. As you can imagine, school safety encompasses a wide variety of topics. After a general review with students on how we can remain safe on a daily basis, your child’s class will receive instruction on the A.L.I.C.E. protocol.
What is ALICE?
Very briefly stated, A.L.I.C.E. is a safety philosophy and action plan that seeks to give all school employees information during an intruder situation so that we, as first responders in crisis, can save lives. A.L.I.C.E. is a program used by schools, businesses, and law enforcement across the country. The philosophy of A.L.I.C.E. is to use information in a way so that staff and students can make informed decisions in a crisis, remove as many people as possible from the danger zone, and provide realistic training so that those involved in a crisis have a better chance of surviving.
A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for, Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. A.L.I.C.E. is not designed to be sequential, but rather to be utilized dynamically in each situation. Teachers will provide direction to the students on what action needs to be taken, so it is very important that students listen and follow the directions given, as this drill is not predictable like a fire drill or tornado drill. This protocol helps us teach students safe decision making skills during a crisis. The A.L.I.C.E. program was introduced to the Zionsville community in the spring of 2014. District parent meetings were held to help inform the public while training took place throughout the 2014-2015 school year with our faculty and staff.
WHY ALICE?
Our local law enforcement and ZCS school safety leaders have been trained in the A.L.I.C.E. protocol. In addition, our ZCS Board of Trustees has met with Boone County and Town of Zionsville police professionals in this regard. Our governing board is in unanimous agreement with law enforcement professionals’ recommendation that we train, communicate, and fully implement the A.L.I.C.E. protocol.
The A.L.I.C.E. program is leveled to be age appropriate and is not meant to scare or frighten children but to empower them with knowledge to make good decisions in a crisis. We will encourage your child to discuss A.L.I.C.E. with you at home. We will continue to highlight the key steps of this protocol with students through daily announcements, safety drills, and classroom conversations. For more information on A.L.I.C.E., please feel free to visit the following website: http://www.alicetraining.com/. If you or your child have continued questions, please contact your school leader.
It is our school and district goal to make our students strong, safe, and empowered.
Thank you for your assistance and support in keeping our students safe.
Sincerely,
Stacy Smith, Principal Pleasant View Elementary
