Today marks the first day of our month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). A little history- Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week (under President Lyndon Johnson) and was expanded to Hispanic Heritage Month (under President Ronald Reagan) in 1988. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. Why is September 15th significant? It is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively.
As our country and school system become increasingly diverse, it is imperative that we provide opportunities for learning and awareness in our district, not just this month, but all year. Please use this month to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of Hispanic people.
