A Note from the School Nurse
It’s that time of the school year where a variety of illnesses start going around. Goodhue School is currently seeing GI illnesses (stomach aches, nausea, and vomiting), common cold symptoms, and influenza-like illness (fever >100 degrees with a cough and/or sore throat). Influenza is widespread in Minnesota. It’s important to keep your child home if they aren’t feeling well in order to prevent spreading illness to others. Students with a fever >100 degrees need to stay home until they are fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT fever-reducing medication. Students must also stay home and be vomit and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours after the last episode. A student diagnosed with strep throat can return to school after 12 hours of antibiotic treatment and are fever-free. When calling in an absence, please state symptoms your child has in order to track illnesses at school.
Practice healthy habits to prevent getting sick. Get adequate sleep, be physically active, drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritious food, and get a flu shot. Avoid close contact with those that are sick, cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue or elbow, wash your hands, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Thank you for your help and cooperation in preventing the spread of illnesses!

What's Your Passion?
Wouldn't we all like to work on our "passion" for 30 minutes a day? Well, some of our Middle Level Learners get a chance to do that.
So, what are Passion Projects?
Passion Projects/Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.
Teachers who use Passion Projects as a regular part of their teaching will enjoy their new role, although for some it might take time to adjust from traditional practice. It’s fun to get creative when designing a project, instead of just using “off the shelf” curriculum materials.
How Often?
We offer Passion Projects opposite Band and Choir. Some students get a chance to work on their project 3 or 4 days a week, while others may only be one day a week. The projects may last 3 to 8 weeks; it all depends on the inquiry, research, and the revisions.
Taite Goodman and Garrett Boldt presented to the School Board last month on their two passion projects. Taite researched how wood baseball bats were created. He ended up learning how to woodwork through various people in the community and ended up making bats for Christmas presents. Where Garrett presented his passion on what makes up an engine. The School Board soon found out that he knows more about why and what makes an engine run than anyone in the room.
Super job Taite and Garrett, we cannot wait to see what your next passion is going to be!
Absence Procedure
Parent/guardian should call the office (651) 923-4447 or email the attendance secretary by 9:00 A.M. on the day of absence with a reason for the absence (24 hour notice if it is for an appointment.)
If calling or emailing is not possible, the student must bring a parent/guardian note explaining the absence to the office no later than 24 hours after the student returns to school. Absences that are not cleared by a parent call, email or note will be considered unexcused.
Upon returning to school students should get an Admit Pass in the office to return to class. Students should show admit pass to each classroom teacher. Students are responsible for obtaining admit passes in the office prior to the start of class. Students who do not seek admit passes may be issued detention.
Assembly: Take Back Your Voice
The goal of the Take Back Your Voice assembly was a short music concert event to build up the student’s confidence in knowing and loving who they are. The singer, Joe, gave life stories that our middle-level learners could relate to. He talked about how we may not always be able to control what others say about us or do to us, but we can control the way we let it affect how we see ourselves. He talked a lot about our Middle School Theme word, resilience! And how important it is to have healthy coping mechanisms through song and honest, unscripted communication. He did a great job of bringing music into the mix and getting the students involved in the event, making it THEIR show.
Joe Scorsone is a Sony recording artist who has committed the last decade of his life to improve the lives of students across the country with his band in arenas and now is bringing his experience to schools. His band out east is called Flintstone.
KIND is the New COOL!
Mr. Opsahl challenged each grade level to do a random act of kindness within our community. Our fifth graders surprised our paraprofessionals with gifts and a holiday luncheon before the holiday break. We all appreciate the things they do for our students and school. Thank you so much, paraprofessionals.
FastBridge Assessments in January
We are preparing for the testing of our Fastbridge Assessments. The testing window is January 6 -16. Students in grades K-8 will be given assessments(s) to measure their growth from our September assessments.
Fast is an effective assessment and progress monitoring tools built into the program. These tools are easy to use, reliable, and most important measures growth. We use these assessment results and classroom teacher input and assessments to make changes within our MTSS (Multiple Tiers of Instruction) classes. This way, we can deliver on time-specific instruction to the child's needs.
