The Owl Times
The Parent Newsletter for Oak Hills Terrace Elementary
From Principal Robinson's Desk
I want to offically welcome our new vice principal, Stephanie Janik! She has actually been working with our OHT community since June, so it feels like she has already been a part of our family for much longer. Mrs. Janik is coming to us from Westwood Terrace Elementary here in Northside where she was an administrator intern. Previous to working in administraion, Ms. Janik was a math specialist and a 5th grade teacher.
While the end of the year did not go as planned, and this year is starting in a way we never could have imagined, I want to assure you that there has been a tremendous amount of planning that has gone into this school year. We hope you find the information in this newsletter helpful. Please know that we are always here for you if you have any questions. Our theme this year is "United We Stand, Together We Learn." We are all in this together, and it will be an amazing year!

The NISD Meal Pass was mailed out to your student's email account with information on August 17.
The NISD Meal Pass will allow pickup of meals at any serving location between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. while maintaining compliance. A copy of the NISD Meal Pass was emailed to your child's email account. If you can't find it, come up to the school anyway. Our cafeteria manager can check you from her list and create a meal pass for you to be turned in. Meal Service is for NISD enrolled students only, but they can be from other campuses as well. There will be no handling of money during curbside meal distribution.
Attendance
In Person Start Dates
OHT Routines This School Year
Once we do start to come back to in person instruction, here are some of the routines we will have in place for those students here on campus.
Once we do start to come in person, parents will need to drop off students at the front parent drop off loop and stay in the car. We will have staff on duty to help direct students to their morning waiting loacations. PreK, ECSE, Kinder and 1st graders will go to the cafeteria and remain in a socially distant format. 2nd graders will wait in the Art room in the mornings. ALE, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will wait in their classrooms in the morning when they arrive. Grab and Go breakfasts will be delivered to all morning waiting locations. All students at OHT receive free breakast and lunch.
Essential Business
If you need to come to campus for essential business, please pull up to the curb and call our front office at 210-397-0550. Most situations allow for us to come out to you. If we need to invite you in to sign paperwork or for any other reason, you will be asked to complete an electronic health survey, sanitize your hands at our hand sanitizer located at the front door, and wear your mask at all times.
Health and Hygiene
Teachers have been provided a wide variety of PPE to include mask, face sheild, disinfectant wipes for their classroom, and spray bottles of disinfectant. Students who are in Kinder to 5th will be required to wear face masks. Those younger than 5 will be encouraged to wear face masks. Sanitizer stations are located throughout the campus. We will also have extra masks on hand for any student or staff member that might need one. Teachers, staff and visitors will complete health surveys every day before they enter the campus. A QR code is posted on the front door to assist with this process. Once students start coming to campus in person, their parents will be required to fill out a health survey each day at first and then eventually once per week depending on Metro Health information and other metrics. We also have several touchless themometers on campus available for temperture checks as staff and students arrive each day.
Breakfast and Lunch
Unfortunately, parents and family members will not be allowed to eat breakfast or lunch with their children here at the campus. We need to limit the cafeteria and courtyard use to students and staff while observing social distancing. We appreciate your help with this. Students will be able to eat a grab and go breakfast at their morning waiting locations. Kinder, 1st and 5th grades will eat in the cafeteria for lunch in a socially distanced format and at different times of the day. PreK, ECSE, ALE, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades will eat lunch in their rooms. If your child remains in the virtual learning environment, they will have the option to still come up for grab and go lunch and breakfast from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in our bus loop closest to Merkens.
Early Outs
Please try to avoid taking your child out early from school if possibe. If you do need to pull your student out of school early, please call the school when you arrive. We will call for the student and bring them out to you. You will still need to provide your ID for verification. If a student is absent or left early, they can still access the recorded lesson in Schoology. If they do this, and complete the work for the day, they can actually be counted present for the day. This is a new policy as result of our virtual learning platform.
Dismissal
Just as with student drop off, we are asking that parents remain in their cars for student pick up. Please do not walk up to the front of the campus to get your child. We need all the room possible to keep everyone safe in a socially distant format. Campus procedures for dismissal include staggering the groups of walkers, parent pick up students, bus riders, and daycare students to help manage student movement in the building and decrease the risk of potential crowding outside at dismissal time. The extra 15 minutes of time added to the end of the day will allow for this and keep with social distancing protocols. Also, only 30% of our students have selected to come back in person, so the traffic should not be as heavy.
2:50 pm: Pre-K to the picture book area of the library for a read aloud until parents arrive. Team Leader will listen for students called for pick up over the walkie. Students will be brought to their waiting car by a teacher.
2:55 pm: Kindergarten to small carpet area of the library near the smartboard for a read aloud until parents arrive. Team Leader will listen for students called for pick up over the walkie. Students will be brought to their waiting car by a teacher.
3:00 pm: 1st grade to front tables of the library for a read aloud until parents arrive. Team Leader will listen for students called for pick up over the walkie. Students will be brought to their waiting car by a teacher.
3:05 pm: 2nd grade to covered awning at main entrance in front of admin offices. Students will remain with their grade level as they actively monitor parent arrivals.
3:05 pm: 3rd grade to covered awning at main entrance by front office. Students will remain with their grade level as they actively monitor parent arrivals.
3:10 pm: 4th grade to covered awning at main entrance in front of the library. Students will remain with their grade level as they actively monitor parent arrivals.
3:10 pm: 5th grade to covered awning at main entrance by front side gate. Students will remain with their grade level as they actively monitor parent arrivals.
Counselor Referral Form and Communities In Schools
Counselors
We have two amazing counselors here at Oak Hills Terrace. Mr. Koog has been here for many years and is an expert with our students and community. Ms. Castillo is joining us for the first year, but has been a Northside counselor for five years at a previous campus. They are here for all of our students, but Mr. Koog will work primarily with PreK/ECSE, Kinder, 2nd and 4th graders, and Ms. Castillo will work with ALE, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders.Northside created a form that parents and students can use when they need to request counseling services. As soon as the form is submitted, it is routed to Central Office where a coordinator will then send it to both Ms. Castillo and and Mr. Koog. You can also reach them directly at thomas.koog@nisd.net or 210-397-0575 and tiffany.castillo@nisd.net or 210-397-0576.

Communities in Schools
This year Oak Hills Terrace is lucky to be a part of the Community in Schools program. We have a social worker as part of our staff. We would like to welcome Alyssa Rivera, who is coming to us from Rayburn Middle School. She will be an incredible addition to our OHT team and a great resource for families. She will help students with supply needs, clothing and food needs, counseling services, and attendance. She is here for our families and if you ever need outside resources she will be your contact. You can reach Ms. Rivera at alyssa.rivera@nisd.net. or her office number at 210-397-0567.
