DAVID MITCHELL was born in Southport, England. Cloud Atlas was written and published in England after his 8 years of teaching in Japan in 2004. Cloud Atlas actually takes place in several places including Korea, Hawaii, Belgium, San Francisco, and New Zealand. He now resides in Clonakilty, Ireland.

The settings obviously very much show this! The time frames range from 1850 in England to beyond the present and to the futuristic setting of a dystopyian Korea. The settings also help with the dynamic of the characters shown. Especially because each of the 6 indiviudal stories including different tones. Including one of the stories called The Ghastly Ordeal Of Timothy Cavendish in which the story is written in a very humurous tone.
Main Characters
Adam Ewing
An American from San Francisco in 1850, Adam Ewing is a shipmate aboard a ship toward Hawaii. He writes a remarkable diary that later affects other characters from different time periods.
Timothy Cavendish
A 65-year old man goes about his life in a very humorous way talking as he flees from one of his gangster clients. Timothy works as a vanity press publisher in modern-day Britain.
Zachry
Zachry lives in the futuristic state of Hawaii where he belongs to a group known as the valley folk. This post- apocalyptic group worships a god called sonmi. He becomes suspicious of meronym, a woman from a sophisticated society that studies the valley folk
