Eastlake Middle School 2.11.19

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members:

What a great week of celebrating our students! We had over 240 eighth graders recognized for having a 4.0 GPA (this semester and second semester of 7th grade) and we had an additional 80 receive certificates for a 3.75 and above. Additionally, we had our Spelling Bee this week! The winning word was pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Actually, the winning words were expectation and proboscis. Thank you to those who helped in recognizing our amazing counselors. There are a couple of items for you to consider:

A. Coffee with the Principal. See you this Tuesday at 8:30 in the library for Coffee with the Principal. We will discuss the ending of this school year, military grant, safety and the opening for next year.

B. Dangers of Vaping. Unfortunately, several students were caught vaping on our campus and also drinking a concoction called Lean (mixture of cough syrup and flavored drinks). We are going to be discussing the health issues of engaging in this risky behavior, but we ask partners that you also share in this discussion. Below is a link to a video that we will be using to start the conversations.

C. ELPAC Testing. In the next two months, one hundred and thirty-five of our English Learner Triton students will be taking the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California) Test. The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is California’s assessment system that is used to determine the English language proficiency of students whose primary language is not English. The ELPAC is aligned with the 2012 California English Language Development Standards and assesses four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The Summative ELPAC is given only to students who have previously been identified as an English learner based upon Initial ELPAC results. The Summative ELPAC measures how well they are progressing with English development in each of the four domains.

To learn more about this test, please attend ELM’s ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) Meeting on Tuesday, February 12th at 9:30 am in the library, right after Coffee with Cooke.

D. Military Grant. We are starting the process of putting together an amazing program for our military families. If you are interested in more information about the TRIDENT Program, please contact Dr. Cooke or attend a future Coffee with the Principal (next one is February 12).

E. Library and Tutoring. We are going to continue keeping our library open Monday through Thursday from 3:20 to 4:20. Tutoring will be provided on Wednesday and Thursday by our ELH tutoring program.

F. Lots Going On! Please see the calendar below for all of the great activities happening at our school site.

G. Recognition. If you have a moment, please recognize our awesome teachers with the link below.

H. Student Concern? If you feel that your student might be a victim of bullying or your student knows of another student being bullied, please use this LINK to report your concerns and we will follow up.

We are lucky to have amazing parents and guardians at ELM. Keep shining and let us know what we can do to support your student.

Triton Trait of the Month (Enthusiasm)

Enthusiasm is putting your whole heart into what you do. Whatever the task, no matter how big or small, it will always turn out better if you put your whole heart into it! A great thing about enthusiasm is that it's contagious! Your spark of energy and excitement can ignite others to live their lives with enthusiasm.

Its also important to remember that enthusiasm is be more than just showing energy and excitement. It is also represented by a passion for a cause or project. One does not have to be the life of the party to build enthusiasm. By treating even the smallest, insignificant jobs as important, paying attention to details even when the newness wears off, and aiming to be an encourager to others, we build relationships and share enthusiasm with everyone around us.

Let us know how we can serve you. We are to support your student and family. If you have questions about the school's programs or how to get additional help for your student, please contact us at your convenience.

Please be aware that we will be utilizing an app called P3 so that students may report directly to the police station any concerns about possible violence, bullying or other areas of concern. It's an anonymous program.
