News from Sundling Junior High

Letter from the Principal
Hello Sundling Families,
It has been a busy month of October, and there have been so many great things happening at our school over the past few weeks. Our fall sports have concluded, and our student athletes grew and developed their skills over the past few months; some receiving district or tournament plaques to showcase their efforts and talents. Many of our clubs and fall intramurals are up and running, and students are staying after school for such activities as Marketing Club, Newspaper Club, Science Fair Club, Service Club, Pickleball, Ultimate Frisbee, Golf and so much more. It is always great to see students getting involved in our activities; gaining new friends and stepping out of their comfort zone to try different things.
Thanks to our WRS PTA and Sundling Staff for hosting another successful Black & Orange Social on October 24th. Many students stayed after school to dance, play Bingo, enjoy free time in the gym or just hang out and be social with friends. It is a great opportunity to stay after school, and for many, take the activity bus home for the first time.
Congratulations to all of our 7th & 8th grade students on their hard work and efforts to finish the first quarter of school. I especially want to acknowledge those students that earned a 4.0 GPA and made the Principal's List. It was great to speak to and spend a few moments recognizing and celebrating high achievement with students and families this week for our Breakfast of Champions event. As we continue into the 2nd quarter, continue to stay focused, stay positive, and work hard! As we swiftly move through the first half of the school year, and prepare for upcoming conferences at the end of November. It is always a great time to sit down with your child(ren) and review current grades, progress, and goals; and revise and update as needed!
Yes, hard to believe, but we did see some snow falling from the sky this week. This is a good time to send a reminder that due to the colder outside temperatures and fluctuating temperatures in the building, it is important to dress appropriately for the bus stop and school day. Dres warm, and wear layers when necessary!
As always, we thank you for your continued support of our school and staff!
Happy November!

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences- November 25 & 26
Walter R. Sundling Parent Teacher Conferences will be held Monday, November 25th from 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, November 26th from 7:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Junior high can be a critical time in a student’s academic and behavioral development. Sundling students enjoy a challenging curriculum, thought-provoking teachers, and a wide variety of extracurricular activities. We recognize that a healthy dialogue between home and school can strengthen the student’s drive to grow and achieve, and also assist with communication and planning between teachers, parents, and students. We plan to use Parent & Student Teacher Conferences as a tool for this purpose, as well as, to explore our students’ learning needs further. This year, we will have our students lead the conference by sharing academic progress and goal setting with their parent(s) and team of teachers.
If you wish to schedule a conference, please call our school office at (847) 963-3703 between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. starting on Thursday, November 14th through Wednesday, November 20th to schedule a meeting time. Please note that each conference is scheduled during a twenty minute block of time. We only have a certain number of conferences available during the designated days, and they will fill up quickly. If a conference time is not available, please feel free to ask your child to share their student conference goal sheet with you or work with the teaching team to find an alternative day/time or method of communication to discuss your child’s progress. It is our belief that the best chance for student success comes from collaboration with all the student’s teachers. As a result, we will make our best effort to have as many of your child’s teachers present at your conference as possible. We require your student’s attendance at this conference, as we feel that his/her role in the process is crucial to improvement and success.
For your convenience, please note that Sundling teachers are available to address concerns via email and phone conferences, as well.
Veterans Day Breakfast & Assembly- November 11
The time is approaching when our thoughts turn to Veterans Day; a day devoted to honoring the men and women who gave a part of their lives to serve our country. As a tribute to those Veterans, the Sundling staff would like students to participate by inviting Veterans to our annual Veterans Day Breakfast.
This will be held at Sundling Junior High on Monday, November 11th, beginning at 8:00 am and lasting until approximately 11:00 am. This occasion, for the student and Veteran, will include the following:
Breakfast for the Veteran and student, prepared by Sundling staff members
Performance by Sundling students
Veterans sharing one memory of their service (optional)
Tour of Sundling Junior High (optional)
Please fill out the RSVP form below and have your child return it to the office no later than Friday, November 1st. In the past, this has been a very popular event, so due to limited space, please send in your reservation early. We look forward to sharing this very special day with you.

Notes from the Nurse
The flu season is back in the news early this year and so it would seem wise to prepare for another wave of flu symptoms. The best advice for your particular situation will come from your family doctor, of course, but generally people over the age of 6 months are being urged to get the flu vaccine. Besides your doctor’s office, there are many convenient locations such as drug stores and community centers to get one. Getting it now allows the body time to build up its immunity before flu’s peak season typically in January and February.
In addition to protecting yourself and your family with a flu shot or nasal mist, it cannot be emphasized enough the importance of frequent handwashing. It is also a good practice to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing or to cough into your elbow to keep those germs off your hands. Staying home from work or school when you are sick is the best way to get better and to keep others here at school from becoming ill.
It is the school district’s policy that students with a temperature over 100 degrees be sent home from school to limit the exposure to classmates. If your child is complaining in the morning or appears unwell, check his/her temperature before the bus comes! The Cook County Health Department and the Health Offices in the schools will be watching the impact of this year’s flu season and will be keeping families informed.
