Principal's Weekly Update

RAISE Goal: to look after my belongings

Te reo phrase of the week: rarangi ki waho (line up outside)

Kia ora,

Last Friday we finished up a highly successful week by claiming the overall win at the Mt Spa inter-school swimming sports. Our swimmers represented Matapu School incredibly well, winning plenty of races and loudly cheering each other on. Today we celebrated the last event of Term 1, the junior school triathlon. Our junior students did so well over the three disciplines and it was neat to see so many of our senior students helping out as marshals on the day.

Pool Closure

Please note that the school pool will close on Sunday 28th March. Please hand your pool keys into the office by Friday 9th April.

TOD

Remember that on Thursday 1st April we will be holding a teachers only day. We will be working with our colleagues from the MOA Kluster (Matapu, Auroa, Opunake, and Kaponga) around how to encourage creativity in our students and effectively implement the digital technologies curriculum.

SPA Update

Below is a breakdown of how the Matapu School SPA Committee has funded different initiatives within our school over the last year. The School, Board, and SPA appreciate every contribution - big or small - towards our fundraising endeavours. We couldn't do it without such an amazing and supportive community!

Room 1

We have had another great week in Room One this week. Thank you to Mrs Heatherton who comes in every Tuesday to teach Robotics and work with our School Leaders to develop their leadership skills and complete some project based learning. This week she made Apple Slice with the Enviro Leaders using apples grown in our school Enviro Area. Delicious!

Room 2

This week we have been learning to use the iPad app called Clips. We have made videos about ourselves including our pepeha. This is a great tool for students to show evidence of their learning and create videos about their work at school. We have nearly finished our pepeha and will post them on Seesaw for our family to watch.

Last Friday we were lucky to have Cecile from Swimming New Zealand provide a lesson in the pool. We learnt what is needed to survive in different conditions if we ever are in danger in the water.

Room 3

It has been great getting back to a normal routine in class for us this week. We have been making more and more use of all the spaces around us. Many of the students like working on both the decks or in one of the many new break-out spaces. It has been exciting for us to begin putting our iPads to good use, and having more choice of when and how we use them.

Room 4

This week in Room 4, we have been working on our buoyancy in the pool and extending how long we can float for survival. For maths we are practising our basic facts on Hit the button and Prototec and working hard on our number of the day maintenance. We have also started exploring the code.org programme.

Room 5

What a great week we have had in Room 5! With Miss Rose being away we have had some awesome teachers in our class and we have done so many awesome learning and creative activities! We have been loving our buddy class time on a Friday where our big buddy class Room 2 teaches us how to do coding on our iPad! It's fantastic!

Room 6

It has been a busy but productive week! We have had visits from Brooklyn and Zyden as they prepare for starting school, as well as Luke and Indy coming to visit during 4Stars. Indy was celebrating her 5th birthday so it was lovely to be able to sing Happy Birthday to her and our Big Buddy Bethan, who shares the same day! Our photo for this week shows us practising fine motor skills and hand eye coordination around a little course that we helped Mrs Bailey set up on Tuesday. We had great fun and really worked on getting our hands and feet to control a ball or a hacky sack by dribbling, bowling or catching. It was a lovely day to be out in the warm sun for a while!
