What Does It Mean To Be A Brickie? - A Letter From Superintendent, Dr. Peggy Buffington!

On behalf of the Board of School Trustees, Administration, Teachers and Staff, welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! School begins for students on Wednesday, August 15th. We are looking forward to an exciting new year! There is so much pride and tradition in being a Brickie! There is such a sense of community in how we rally behind this mascot and that oh so famous motto we teach every student. "All My Life I Want to Be a Brickie! Work! Work! Work!"

What does it really mean to be a Brickie? I had the privilege of reading an Alumni scholarship application where one of our students explained it so well. See what I mean in the image below.

We Can Help Students Achieve Their Goals and Dreams With Hobart University!

We can ensure achievement of students’ goals and dreams because of the incredible opportunities we provide in the School City of Hobart. Welcome to the inaugural year of Hobart University. Hobart University offers a variety of dual credit Early College programs in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College. What is dual credit and Early College? Students who are enrolled in Early College courses are referred to as having “dual credit” classes; meaning students receive high school credit and college credit at the same time. These opportunities are constantly evolving, and we are committed to providing innovative courses, programs, and opportunities for our Brickies that are aligned with 21st-century skills, changes in higher educational demands, and job market trends. We are very proud of our accomplishments and course offerings. Earning a high school diploma and college credentials is what Hobart University is all about.

These Early College opportunities provide a cost-effective, efficient, and engaging way for students to take courses that align with their career interests. Most of these classes are FREE! Students save money and time by enrolling in our Early College program called Hobart University while attending high school. Students are provided with unbelievable opportunities that they otherwise wouldn’t have until later in life. Visit our website at https://www.hobart.k12.in.us/Page/9257 to learn more about these opportunities. Talk to your children about preparing for Hobart University! Students need to have good grades to be eligible for Early College, and this means students need to do their personal best at every grade level.

We are working hard for the Brickies by fulfilling our vision and mission daily and striving for Success for All Students from Cradle to Career. We pledge the following to our Brickies:

  • Our Schools Equip Children for Adulthood
  • Our Schools Address the Needs of Individual Students
  • Our Schools Are Community Schools
  • Our Schools Are Committed to Success

Our goals toward this mission include the following: Literacy, Problem Solving, Citizenship, and College & Career Readiness. We have added a Learning Management System called Canvas to aid students and parents in monitoring assignments and grades. It works with Skyward, our Student Management System. Both systems have a portal for students and parents that permit access to grades, attendance, discipline, and messaging. Please use these great tools with our youth to keep them on the road to success. By working together, we can ensure Every Brickie, Every Day will do their personal best and OWN IT for a great year.

Educationally Yours,

Peggy Buffington, PD. D., Superintendent of Schools
