News from the Nest SMORE Improvement

The English Landing PTA purchased an upgraded version of SMORE. This upgraded version allows us to post the weekly SMORE newsletters on our school website.

The previous version was free so we did not have this opportunity to capture weekly publications.

Thank you, English Landing PTA!

Third Place (Team 411): Max Casey, Tory Abrahamson, Brady O'Hara

Save the DATE! Student-Led Conferences on February 9, 2016

Before School: 7:45am to 8:30am

After School: 4:00pm to 6:30pm

Student-Led Conferences are just around the corner. English Landing hosts Student-Led Conferences during the third quarter to provide each student the opportunity to review his/her learning progress with his/her parents or family. This date is not listed on the 2015-2016 Park Hill School District Calendar because it is an event specific to our school. The English Landing teachers believe in the importance of empowering students to set individual learning goals and want to provide an opportunity for parents and families to visit their child's classroom and participate in this process. It is also really hard to believe that this school year is flying by so quickly and parents and families haven't visited our classrooms to review learning progress since the end of first quarter which was three months ago.

Please schedule a time for your child's Student-Led Conference with your child's classroom teacher. Classroom teachers have set up Sign-Up Genius links to assist with scheduling. Thank you!

January Home Learning Results!

Message from Mr. Wachel

Home Learning Results have been calculated! Our eagles in third grade continue to have a stronghold on the monthly Home Learning Challenge, winning 4 months in a row. Will any other grade level rise up to their level?

Let’s see what February brings!

Take Your Child to Work Day: Student Attendance CHANGE!

As families begin to make plans for Take Your Child To Work Day (April 28, 2016), I want to make sure you have accurate information regarding a CHANGE in how student attendance will be documented on this day.

In the previous school years, a letter has been sent home with all Park Hill elementary students stating that they would be counted present at school if a signed form and Take Your Child to Work Day reflection activity was returned. This will not be the case beginning this year since following this former practice would violate the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education guidelines regarding student attendance.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education language regarding daily student attendance states: Students must be in attendance in an instructional capacity under the direct supervision of a certificated employee of the district to be counted for attendance purposes. Therefore, if students are absent, for part or all of the day, on Take Your Child To Work Day (Thursday, April 28th), they will be counted as absent for the time they are not in school.

In Park Hill at the elementary level, we do not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences. Therefore, when a student is absent, it is simply counted as an absence. At English Landing Elementary School, we do not recognize perfect (100%) attendance. We strive for student attendance to be at or above 95%.

I encourage you to make the decision that best meets the needs of your child/family when determining if your child will participate in Take Your Child To Work Day (April 28, 2016). Please let me know if you have any additional questions regarding attendance procedures for Take Your Child to Work Day (April 28, 2016).
