5th Grade Update
The week of 4/15
Math
We have started a unit on dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions(fractions whose numerator is 1 ex. 1/3). Students should be able to use models to solve these problems. This week we will be focusing on solving word problems involving whole number and unit fraction division. Students will have a test on dividing with unit fractions and whole numbers Thursday.
Science
Reading/Social Studies
We are reading various texts about the American Revolution. Students are learning about the taxes the colonists faced, the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. They will learn what it felt like to live during this time period in history.
Students are reading the novel My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christorpher Collier. We are reading about the life of a young boy during this time in history. We will see how the young boy felt about the war and what obstacles he faced.
Morphology this week will focus on miss and mit with a meaning of to send. We will also focus on port which means to carry.
**Homework will be given out on Mondays and to be returned the following Monday. Student’s should also be completing unfinished classwork at home for homework.
**Please make sure your child is reading AT LEAST 20 minutes a night.** We have started Accelerated Reader! Ask your child about it!

Reminders
- Starting Monday, 10/2 parents may eat lunch with their child in the school's courtyard!
- Breakfast is $1.50 and lunch is $3.00. Money can be added to students accts. by using the linq app (student number will be needed).If you send in (cash/check) with your child, please put it in a zip-lock bag with their name on it.
- Any transportation changes MUST be written in the students agenda.
- Absence notes need to be turned in within 2 days. After this time the absence will remain unexcused per county policy. Not all absences qualify to be excused.
