The Lance
March 2-13
The mission of Lakeshore Middle School is to promote collaboration between educators, students, and families to foster engaged learners and active and compassionate
members of their community.
Reflections from Mr. Swegles
What's Your Cool?
That is how our speaker, Dr. Joe Johnson, started his talk on Friday afternoon with our middle level Lancers.
Three Topics Shared from Dr. Joe:
1. What's Your Cool?
Dr. Joe equates our "cool" with our purpose in life. Our purpose is the gift that we have to share with the world. Often times, people confuse their dreams with their purpose. Ever watch the early episodes of American Idol and think to yourself that you could sing better than some of the people on there. Yeah, they might be following their dreams and not their purpose and they just haven't realized it, yet. Follow your purpose and bring your passion with you.
2. Sixth Sense and Gut Instinct
Dr. Joe encouraged our kids to use their gut instinct. If they know something is good then go after it with purpose. If they know something is wrong then go in the other direction or face the negative consequences.
3. 4Ps
As his t-shirt stated, "We are the PRODUCT of the PEOPLE we PLACE in our PRESENCE." We have often heard the old saying your are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with. Studies show that you are the average of ALL the people you surround yourself with.
I hope the kids took away at least one thing that resonated with them that can help propel them forward. You can learn more about Dr. Joe at https://www.joejohnsongroup.com/.
Lakeshore Middle School would like to send a special THANK YOU to our local
Whirlpool Corporation for their generous donation. A school is only as strong as its
community and with Whirlpool’s support, we were able to replace our school’s two
broken ice machines. Both items are greatly appreciated and will allow us to support
the ongoing health and well-being of Lakeshore Middle School students and staff. We
are beyond grateful!! Thank you again, Whirlpool, for your generosity and support.

Chromebooks Expectations
This is a great time to remind students and families of what are Chromebook expectations are here at school.
Everything done on the Chromebook must be school appropriate.
Everything your student does on the Chromebook is monitored. When something is flagged as unsafe or inappropriate by our filtering system an email is sent to school administration. Information is then shared with parents. If child safety is a concern a situation may be shared with our school counselor, Mrs. Weaver.
No outside devices are to be used in place of Chromebook
Fully charged at night and brought back the next day
If there technical difficulties with a student's Chromebook, the process is to take it to the library, fill out a technical repair sheet, and get a loner. Loners are not provided, however, for Chromebooks that have not been charged.
Students are still responsible for the work that is expected to done if they do not come prepared with their Chromebook.
There's a Battle Brewing!
Thirty One days until the Battle begins! May the best TEAM win!

The Positivity Project
The week of March 2 is an Other People Matter week. We will encourage students to Celebrate the Success of Others. Success begets success, so hopefully recognizing it in others will in turn bring it upon ourselves.
We are now providing a platform for students to recognize their peers for demonstrating one of the character strengths or other people matter actions. Students will always have the opportunity to fill out a Google Form. A student receiving recognition will be provided with the write up from their peers. When we slow down and see the good in others it makes us happier individuals as well. Also, when we are able to spot and state the character strengths in others that are on display we are then better equipped to spot the character strengths in ourselves.
The week of March 9 our character strength focus will be on social intelligence. In lieu of a character card this week, please, watch the Kid President video of 20 things we should say more often. It's great!

Information Worth Sharing
I love this article by Birmingham Schools Superintendent, Mark Dziatczak, and how we can spread the snow day spirit every day, not just days we get to stay home and watch Price is Right at 11:00am on CBS.
