Images, Advertising & Imagination
Starling
Marketing And Our Minds
How do the images of marketing and advertising connect to our imagination? Is it for better or for worse? And how does it affect what creative people create? This episode looks at the father of modern marketing, Edward Bernays, and considers how his tactics have moved from being used on us to being used by us. It asks us to consider how our imagination is often directed towards creating a parallel reality of what we could buy, have or be rather than being used to develop our own art.
To be very honest...I hate marketing, selling and advertising. I think most creative people have this same hatred. It feels like our work should speak for itself and having to be a used car salesman to convince people that the art we create fells against our nature. So...I know that my view of this topic is a little skewed. However, when I looked at the history and how we are manipulated it reinforced my opinion about the topic.

Suggested Practices:
- Notice how often you are taking in images meant to advertise something to you. Whether it is a product, personality, idea or what have you.
- Become aware of how those images are directing your attention and what it might be trying touch in your subconscious or psychology…is it effective? Why?
- How does it pull your own imagination? What does it ask you to imagine into and create a narrative around?
- Notice how images on social media use these same techniques…even if they are not really ads. See how friends and family use images to tell a visual story about their projected self.
- Now…being honest…how are you doing that? Are you using any of the techniques and ideas that we discussed? Were you aware you were doing it?
- How does it feel to know you are participating in this?
- How would it feel to not participate in this?
- Maybe even play around with how the images you create and share are using these ideas and evaluate how that works…how it feels…why you would or would not use it.
