College and Career Readiness
Pennsylvania Department of Education
In an effort to ready all students in Pennsylvania for postsecondary success, the Department of Education has included career exploration, preparation and readiness as a part of the state and federal accountability plan. Academic standards have been established for Career Awareness and Preparation, Career Acquisition, Career Retention and Advancement and Entrepreneurship. These standards are a part of a students' school experience, beginning in Kindergarten. All students across the Commonwealth are required to create a portfolio of their experiences that demonstrate exposure to the standards and will ultimately serve as a blueprint for future successes.
Portfolio Requirements
Grade 5
By the end of grade 5, students will have created portfolios that contain six pieces of evidence, two from each year in grades 3, 4, and 5. Pine Road students are exposed to jobs and responsibilities in our community through various aspects of the curriculum. They are also challenged to find their spark and begin to identify their interests and strengths. Student portfolios are created during the Technology encore class and are supported by the technology teacher, school counselors and classroom teachers.
Grade 8
By the end of grade 8, students will have a portfolio that contains the evidence from the K-5 grade band, as well as, six additional pieces of evidence, two from each year in grades 6, 7 and 8. This will include an individualized career plan. At the middle school level students will further explore career opportunities that match their interests and abilities. Students will also be introduced to the Easter Center for Arts and Technology. Continued exposure to possible careers occurs in a cross curricular manner and individualized attention occurs in the Study Skills, Communication Arts and Careers classes. The curation of evidence is supported by classroom teachers and the school counselor.
Grade 11
By the end of grade 11, student portfolios will contain the evidence from grades K-5 and 6-8, the individualized career plan and eight additional pieces of evidence across grades 9-11, two of which must demonstrate the implementation of the student's individualized career plan. While additional opportunities for real world connections and introduction of careers will continue across curricular settings, students will be supported by school counselors in order to identify and set education and career goals, monitor progress and individualize student experiences. Naviance tools, Meet the Rep Night, college planning meetings and participation in a career fair will be important components to this process.
