Missouri becomes a slave state
Missouri Compromise
Sectionalism is threatening the Union.Congress recently accepted Missouri's request in becoming a slave state. If Missouri became a slave state then it would offset the balance between the 11 slave states and 11 free states. The Senate would then have favor in the South. A special amendment was passed by the house allowing Missouri to become a slave state, but bringing in slaves would be illegal. When North Carolina's senator argued that they should continue to add slave states the Senate decided to take back Missouri's right of a slave state. Henry Clay brought up the idea of the Missouri Compromise. This allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state, Maine would become a free state, and slavery would not be allowed in any new territories north of 36 degree 30' latitude. Congress accepted Clay's document. The North and South are still having disagreements because of the expansion of slavery.
