Students wishing to meet with their counselor should email their counselor for an appointment. It may take a couple of days to get an appointment, so please plan ahead. See the list below for counselor assignments. Parents may schedule an appointment by emailing the counselor direct or calling 360.279.5717.

Colleges

Representative Visits—Several college representatives will be doing virtual visits. Check out the OHHS Website Calendar for a list of visits. Students interested in attending one of these informative sessions can use the link to sign up.

Applications—Parents of Seniors intending on applying to 4-year colleges should encourage their students to start the college application process early. Many applications are now “live” online, and deadlines are quickly approaching. Colleges encourage students to apply early for admissions, housing, and financial aid consideration.

Financial Aid

Students who plan to attend a college in the Fall of 2021 will want to complete their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Please see our FAFSA newsletter https://www.smore.com/jncsd for workshops and application completion events. Colleges have Financial Aid deadlines to be aware of.

Scholarships

Many State/National Scholarships are now available and can be found online using one of the scholarship database search engines such as Scholarships.com, Niche, Cappex, or thewashboard.org.

Local Scholarships—Most of these scholarships will become available after December. Students should check the scholarship listing on the OHHS website frequently for updated information about available scholarships and deadlines.

Testing

SAT and ACT Students applying for college admissions for fall 2021 do not need SAT and/or ACT scores. Colleges have either waived them or made them test-optional. Visit sat.org or act.org. Our next scheduled SAT will be May 8, 2021.

PSAT will be offered on January 26, 2021. The PSAT is used to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It also serves as a practice test for the SAT. Sign up will be after winter break. Students can prepare by taking a practice test: PSAT Practice Test.

ASVAB - will be February 2, 2021. Sign-ups will be after winter break. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-choice test administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command to determine enlistment qualification in the United States Armed Forces.

One of the strengths of the CharacterStrong curriculum is the relationships it builds between students to peers, students and school staff, students and family, and students and the greater community. This is done through intentional relationship-building activities that put a daily and weekly focus on what is most important to making this happen. We need to be reminded more than we need to be taught.

COOPERATION

Have family members share some things they do at school or work that require cooperation. Do the same thing at home. Discuss why that's important.

We are the Parent Academic Booster Club at OHHS! Otherwise known as

OHHS PTO (Parent Teacher Organization)

We need your support to keep our programs at OHHS and for parents to

volunteer for the Open Board Positions! All of the PTO Board Positions are

open, and if you are interested in more information, please send us an email.

Why does a High School need a Parent-Teacher Organization? If you haven’t

noticed OHHS has a lot of Parent Groups that support a small interest group of

the school (Band, Choir, Robotics, NJROTC, Grad Night) but the PTO at the

High School supports ALL the students at OHHS, not just a certain interest group,

and our hard-working staff.

All of the PTO funds stay at OHHS to support the students at OHHS by donating

to the Invest Ed Program, Snacks for Final, OHHS PTO Scholarship, and our

largest expenditure, the Academic Letter Program.

Since the mid-1990’s we have sponsored the Academic Letter Program. This

program encourages students ranked with their cohort class to

maintain their GPA at 3.5 or greater. Each year we award over 140 Academic

Letters to students who have received a GPA of 3.5 or greater for 3 consecutive

trimesters. We also recognize an additional over 300 students each year who

have maintained their GPA at 3.5 or greater once they have received their

Academic Letter.

We are also:

• Informational source for parents and community members

• The volunteers at upcoming events around the High School Campus

• Support the staff at OHHS

• Address issues that directly affect your student

OHHS Academic Boosters PTO

Last fall, when our Advisory classes discussed the community service ideas and brainstorming on the whiteboard, someone said it would be cool if we could clean the beach together, and I jumped on board. So we made it our goal to do a service every season, and last year, they cleaned the beach and volunteered to play games with seniors at Regency on Whidbey. Our plan last spring was to help Habitat for Humanity, but Covid got in the way. My Advisory kids come up with ideas; we coordinate and invite other students to join us. It's especially great for kids who are not in clubs or classes that already volunteer. It's really bringing our class together. Right now, we can only volunteer outside, so we will research the city if we could paint some of the old parks in town.

On Veteran's Day, Americans honor all living military veterans. (Another holiday, Memorial Day, honors those who died while in military service.) Veterans Day is always observed on November 11th with speeches and parades across the United States.

Veteran's Day Facts

When the holiday first began, it had a different name, Armistice Day. Here is how the day has progressed over time:

• The first Veterans Day was on November 11, 1919, which was the first anniversary of the end of World War I.
• In 1926, Congress passed a resolution that requested President Calvin Coolidge to issue annual proclamations to observe the holiday.
• In 1938, November 11 became a national holiday through a Congressional Act.
• In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name to Veterans Day to honor all American wars veterans.
• In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971 but reverted to November 11th in 1975 by President Ford because of the important historical significance the data held.
