Blaze Bulletin
Edition 2 - Week of August 28
Greetings...
Dear teachers,
This week we have an opportunity to impact our students in an amazing way. Rachel's Challenge is coming to BHS on August 30. This story of a girl who helped the downtrodden and disenfranchised - without glory - is a model for all of us. I hope you will be engaged with the students as they experience this assembly and afterward, too, as they process what they have heard.
During the assembly, please take your places as if in a pep rally. We need to be among the students as the assembly is taking place.
Best wishes for a restful weekend,
Leisa Justus
GRADE REMINDER...
Teachers should enter an average of 2 grades per week. Each week the grades should be updated in iNow. This is the way students and parents can follow progress.

Rachel's Challenge Presentation August 30
Rachel's Challenge is based on the life of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Rachel's Challenge is a bullying and violence abatement program. It exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion.

Quadratics in Integrated Math II
The following pictures represent the bodies of rockets my students are building. We still have the nose cones and fins to assemble and put on them.
We are building rockets because they are one of the best ways to simulate a quadratic function in a real-world situation. The height of a rocket at any given time, after launch, is a real-world application of a quadratic function. The height of a rocket increases to an absolute maximum height, then the height decreases until it reaches the ground again. I am having the students build the rockets so we can launch them in September, during the next set of block days. Students will be calculating the initial velocity of their rockets, as well as the maximum height of their rockets. They will use this data to construct a quadratic model for the height of their rockets over time and be able to make predictions on height at various times.
We could just answer some questions involving hypothetical data from someone else's experiment, but the students would not have the concrete experience from launching their own rocket to remember and associate with quadratics. I am hoping the students will have a lot of fun building and launching the rockets, and be able to tie those memories to our quadratics unit, to extend and improve their knowledge of quadratics this year.
Learning to tie a tie better not be on the EOC!
Congratulations to the DeGeorge family!
James Lincoln DeGeorge was born June 13th weighing 7 lbs 14 oz. Amber and Lincoln are doing great!
