Principal's Message

This week, many of our classes were focused on preparing for Earth Day, which is tomorrow, April 22. We had an assembly with C & S Waste and our PTA hosted a Family Engagement Night tonight where students learned about recycling and how to sort trash. They also learned about worms and they planted beautiful flowers in our patio area. I hope this weekend your family can think of things to do around your home or in our community to help celebrate the day.

Yesterday, April 20, I put out a video to talk about the safety changes we are making beginning Monday, April 24. A link to the video is provided below. A few questions came up today that I didn't address in the video. Here are the answers:

Beginning Monday, students will enter the cafeteria in the morning through the gate near our patio. You can't see it in the video, but there are doors that lead into the cafeteria through that gate. Only students will enter through this gate prior to the start of school at 8:15. TK students who come for the before-school program will use this gate as well. TK students who arrive at 9:15 will still meet their teacher at the front doors. Any students who arrive late will need to check into the front office.

What about parents? Parents and/or community members who have completed our Volunteer Training will sign in at the office and print a badge that has their photo, name, date, and location they are scheduled to volunteer in, prior to entering the hallway areas of the school. Our staff will be checking badges. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact the school office to make an appointment for the training. You will need to have completed the Confidential Volunteer Questionnaire form and you will need to have a valid license or ID to register through our SchoolPass system. We are able to track who is on campus through this system.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please call the school office or you can reach me by email at tcockerill@susanvillesd.org

Celebrate Earth Day this weekend!

Earth Day

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Thank you to our friend Katie from C & S Waste who spoke to our students this week about ways they can help the planet and our school. So many students were out picking up trash this week and our school is looking so much better!

Thank you also to our PTA who held an Earth Day Family Engagement event. Our students are learning to be responsible citizens who take care of their school, community, and the planet!

ELAC/DELAC

Our English Language Advisory Council met this past week. Superintendent Waddell shared goals from our LCAP related to our English Language Learners and asked for parent input. Students who attended were able to do art projects and play some fun games. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Salome Shaw at sshaw@susanvillesd.org.

Ms. Maria Mankins, TK Teacher

Ms. Mankins is loving our new TK Zone this year! She was instrumental last summer designing art work for the hallways, choosing furniture for our TK classrooms, and making sure our TK students had plenty of items in the classrooms that would stir up their imaginations!

In her free time, Ms. Mankins likes walking on the Bizz Johnson Trail and spending time with her dog. Ms. Mankins also loves to perform at Best of Broadway (her dog was Toto!). She is raising her students to be future performers and responsible community members! Our TK have made several trips this year to Eagle Lake Village to sing. They performed at our Veterans' Day and Christmas programs, held the first ever TK Fashion Show, and are looking forward to performing in a couple of weeks at our Spring Program. Ms. Mankins will have them ready for America's Got Talent!

Ms. Mankins says the best thing about teaching TK is their sweet innocence. She loves to see their eyes light up when they learn something new. This week they were learning about bubbles!

Her wish for all of our students at McKinley is that they would have a kind world to grow up in.

Let's join her in that wish and do all that we can to make that happen!
