A Commitment to High Levels of Learning for ALL Students
Dear MRHS parent(s)/guardian(s),
We are excited to inform you that we will be continuing our visionary program (Jawsome Hour) that we strongly believe benefits our students academically, socially and emotionally. This letter will highlight the goals and expectations of Jawsome Hour.
The fundamental purpose of our school is to ensure all students learn at high levels. The future success of students depends on how effective we are in achieving this fundamental purpose. Our staff worked diligently and collaboratively to identify a systemic intervention (Jawsome Hour) that ensures students receive additional time and support for learning when they struggle, and extend and enrich learning when they have mastered expected outcomes.
Jawsome Hour is built in time during the school day for ALL students to target high priority learning needs and participate in enrichment opportunities.
Goals of Jawsome Hour - During the School Day We will:
Increase opportunities to support ALL learners
Allow time for student CHOICE=involvement in enrichment/extracurricular activities
Allow more efficient use of staff & student time during the lunch block
Allow for personalization of education
Focus on student academic growth
Provide opportunities to support students socially and emotionally
Jawsome Hour is a focus on Academics. It is our belief that students given time during the school day to focus on individual improvement, and the ability to work with teachers eager to support them, will result in improved academic performance for all students.
Staying Above Sea Level:
Students who are academically and behaviorally meeting expectations (above sea level) are rewarded with “choices.” Students who are struggling academically, receive a zero, or need to make up work will receive the academic supports they need. Students who do not meet behavioral expectations as described in our student handbook will lose their “choice” privilege and may serve detention during Jawsome time.
Potential Enrichment Opportunities:
College Planning visits
Independent Study
Study groups
Intramurals
Club & Class meetings
Guest Speakers
Academic Overtime (AOT):
Academic Overtime is mandatory scheduled academic support for students.
Students are required to attend Academic Overtime when assigned by the teacher until they no longer need support. Students will be scheduled for AOT support if they have a D or F in any course. They may also serve (teacher discretion) AOT when:
They have a zero on any assignment
They are underperforming in class
They have an incomplete in any course
They need to make up work
Other Potential Academic Supports:
AP/MCAS Bootcamp/Study Sessions
SAT Strategies
Homework Help
Essay Writing 101
Peer Tutoring
Individual Guidance Appointments, College Planning, Scheduling, etc.
Social/Emotional Support
Scheduling:
To maintain safety, accountability, and organization, all students will have a personal Jawsome schedule for each week. We will be using special scheduling software (Enriching Students) that will allow us to schedule efficiently and effectively. Every day 1 during Jawsome time students and teachers will complete their schedules for the following week during an “advisory” block. This will allow students the opportunity to coordinate with peers over the weekend to plan lunch, study groups, enrichment, etc.
Academic Overtime is a priority and will be scheduled by teachers for students in need of support. Otherwise, students are free to choose their enrichment opportunities for the week and when they will eat lunch. This will allow students to coordinate with friends to enjoy lunch, study, participate in clubs/activities and choose from a variety of enrichment opportunities.
Student Expectations:
1) We consider Jawsome to be a privilege, a one of a kind experience for students.
2) ALL students need to BE SOMEWHERE during the entire Jawsome block.
-In your scheduled class (AOT/Enrichment)
-Lunch
3) Lunch: Students may eat in the cafeteria, tables on main street outside the cafeteria, tables outside the community entrance (weather permitting), teachers rooms with permission, and for seniors only as part of their senior privilege - tables outside the library and picnic tables outside the courtyard across from the library (weather permitting).
4) Team Rooms: Team rooms are to be used ONLY by students with teacher supervision.
5) Students in good academic and behavioral standing will be able to choose when to eat and what teacher-led activity, enrichment, or support they would like to attend.
6) Students are to attend academic overtime when scheduled by their teacher (mandatory).
7) Failure to attend AOT will result in disciplinary action, including detention and loss of Jawsome Hour privileges.
8) Central Detention: Will no longer be held after school- it will be held during Jawsome
There will be two types of daily detention. Full detention, in which you will report directly to detention with your lunch and half detention, in which you will eat first and report to detention second 30 minutes. Large Conference room in guidance.
9) Students are to arrive to their Jawsome period and 4th block on time. There will be traditional 4 minute passing times before Jawsome, between Jawsome A & B, and 4th block to allow transition time.
Our goal is to establish a culture of high expectations, trust, and respect while offering students the support, opportunities, freedoms, and privileges inherent in all great schools. We believe Jawsome Hour contributes to our journey of moving our school from good to great. We would appreciate parents and guardians support in ensuring your child is taking full advantage of the many opportunities Jawsome Hour will provide. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 508.430.7200 or bburkhead@monomoy.edu.
Sincerely,
William Burkhead

Team effort to make a super special lunch for our 40+ new Monomoy sharks!
Alison Burton and Betsy Casey hosted a welcome lunch for our 40+ new students at Monomoy High School. These were students in grades 8-12 who transferred here from other schools. It was a tremendous team effort with delicious lunch prepared by our cafeteria, games, dessert and music provided by our Peer Leadership students. The sun was shining and there were smiles ALL AROUND. Welcome to our home away from home!

Two Poems from Creative Writing Class Reflecting on 9/11
Remember This Day and Never Forget
By: Tian Jamieson, 9th Grade
The death. The pain.
The country waiting,
Holding her breath.
Not daring to think,
Not daring to believe
That this perfect day is a day of doom.
People screaming
People crying.
People jumping.
Prayers being prayed,
Lives being lost.
Death upon death.
Nothing stopping,
Nothing waiting.
Running, running, running.
To the scene,
Away from the scene.
Everyone going somewhere,
Yet no one is going anywhere.
Utter panic strikes her.
Pain in her chest seizes her.
She dares not breathe,
Knowing that her beautiful country is falling down.
As the towers fell down to the ground.
Her eyes fill with tears,
Her vision blurred.
But her ears,
Her ears can still hear.
Her heart can still feel,
Her mind can still remember.
Remember this day, O world.
Remember the souls, O America
Remember the words of the last, O people.
Remember, remember, remember.
And never forget.

Students will visit booths staffed by Cape Cod Five employees and other members of the community as they make financial decisions about what they want, what they need and what they can afford. The Credit for Life Fair was designed to help students gain an understanding of the financial decisions they will have to make when they are on their own, without parents or guardians paying the bills and covering costs of food, clothing, shelter and entertainment.

8th Grade
Mrs. Burton, the 8th grade School Counselor, is in the middle of visiting English classes to greet our newest members of the Monomoy High school family. During her lesson she is introducing the Guidance department, the various services available and how to access assistance. Also discussed is academics, attendance policies and importance of involvement in school activities (Jawsome Hour and Clubs and Activities). It is so wonderful to see the excitement and interest these students already have for being in high school!
Senior Fall Focus
We wrapped up our senior class meetings this week and have started the individual senior meetings with students. The students have copies of a Parent Brag Sheet and it is very helpful to have information from the ones that know their child best as we write the recommendation letters. Seniors also have a recommendation form to complete to give to their counselor to help with the recommendation process.
College Visits at MRHS
Colleges will be visiting the school regularly for information sessions. Students should be checking Naviance on a regular basis and can register through Naviance for the info sessions.

Athletics Weekly Summary
Written by: Emma Santoni
This week the Sharks started on the road. Friday, Girls’ and Boy’s Cross Country raced over to DY where DY ended up coming out on top. There were great performances by Courtney Dery and Margo Dery who were the fastest female runners for Monomoy. Steven Young and Ryder Robbins were the top two male Monomoy runners. On Tuesday both Cross Country teams battled against Rising Tide. Boys Cross Country beat Rising Tide 31-21 with Ryder Robbins and Steven Young coming in first and second overall. Girls Cross Country lost a close one, 30-28. Courtney and Margo Dery were the top two Monomoy runners.
Saturday was the perfect day for the Sharks Football team to travel right up the road to hometown rivals Cape Cod Tech. After a long game that extended into an overtime period, the Sharks beat Cape Cod Tech (14-6). Elijah Beasley who was coming off of an injury from last week scored both touchdowns for the Sharks. Quarterback Noah Concordia found Beasley twice in the end zone with a 35 and a 20 yard pass. Tyler Gorman’s interception ended the Tech’s hopes of coming back in overtime. The Shark defense was outstanding stopping the Crusaders from within the 2 yard line more than once.
Saturday, Boys Soccer travelled to Barnstable for a non-league game. Boys lost 4-0. There were strong performances from Ryan Meehan, Liam Mawn and Sam Higgins. The boys bounced back on Tuesday with a huge win against Falmouth Academy 4-1. Senior AJ Williams scored all 4 goals for the Sharks. Thursday they lost 2-1 to Cape Cod Academy with Sean Gould scoring for the Sharks off an assist from Sam Chase. The Sharks fought hard till the end nearly scoring the tying goal.
Saturday found Girls Soccer in Barnstable as well. They unfortunately got beat 2-1 with Dakota Hesse scoring the lone goal for Monomoy. Josephine Ganshaw was strong in net with thirteen saves backed by strong defense from Alyssa Lyons and Marissa Grenier. Tuesday the Lady Sharks came out strong in offense and beat Falmouth Academy 2-0. Kelsey Olson scored the first goal off an assist by Kate Gabri. Gabri went on to score the second goal.
After a busy week last week with three tough opponents, the Field Hockey team opened their week with another non league tough opponent and a loss to Sandwich 3-1. Caroline DiGiovanni scored the lone goal for the Sharks. The Sharks returned to the field Wednesday to beat Sturgis East 2-0. Holly Evans and Caroline DiGiovanni scored the two goals for Monomoy.
On Monday Golf lost to Nauset 0-6. There were strong Monomoy performances by Matt Smeltzer and Christian Whittle. Golf had their first victory Tuesday afternoon with an 80-52 win versus Cape Cod Academy. Matthew Smeltzer (19), Grady Howell (14) and Josh Poitras (14) helped lead the team to victory.
Congratulations to the Unified Track Team and Mrs Grogan for officially being a Unified Champion School. Continue your good work. We are proud of our Sharks who are also “Game Changers”, making our school and community a better place.
