McGovern News!

May 28, 2021

It was so fun to see many of our incoming kindergarten students at screening this week! Their energy and excitement was a joy to see. We can't wait to officially welcome them to McGovern next year.

Seeing students playing outside this week has truly brought smiles to everyone who is a member of our community. The weather and excitement has been particularly special this week. Mr. Shoenfelt spent time creating amazing structures (see the picture below) to hold students' masks while they are outside. I am so appreciative of his great idea and the time spent making the structures. It has streamlined our process for taking off masks and storing them during recess. Each student has a number that they use daily and we are already considering ways to use these, post pandemic! Thank you, Mr. Shoenfelt!

Though they may look different than in years past, we have a lot of exciting end of year events. Please see below for more information.

Finally, as we head into this Memorial Day weekend, please remember the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the US military. There is no school on Monday, May 31st in observance of Memorial Day.

Best,

Amy McDonald, Principal

End of Year Celebrations and Traditions

As we inch closer to the end of the school year, it is important to celebrate the milestones of this year. As such, I am excited to share with you that we hold some typical end of year transitions this year...though they may look a little different.

Trip to Memorial: Our 1st grade students will visit Memorial School on either June 7th or 10th for a tour of the building and meeting with Mr. Kelly. Teachers will send home permission slips in the coming days.

The schedule is below:

Monday, June 7:

9:00-9:45 (bus loads at 8:50 am)

Los, Kelly, O'Connell

10:00-10:45 (bus loads at 9:50ish)

Lomuscio, Barrows, Pierangeli, Rioux

Thursday, June 10:

9:00-9:45 (bus loads at 8:50 am)

Caveny, Barucci, Jackson, virtual school students(need to be transported to Memorial by their own parent/guardian)

McGovern Spirit Week

As part of our end of year fun, we will have spirit week at McGovern School on June 7-11, 2021. Please see below for fun, creative happenings for each day. We encourage all students and staff to participate!

Field Day

Planning is underway for the McGovern Field Day. It will certainly be a modified event this year, but we are grateful to end the year with this tradition! Students will engage in a small rotation of outside activities, recess, art activities, a movie, and opening and closing ceremonies. MEPTO has graciously secured "The Rhythm Room" to deliver a show of high-energy music that represents world rhythms.

We will be looking for a very small group of 20 parents to help for the full day at McGovern School. The requirement is that you are able to arrive early to help set up, stay for the full day and then help with clean up. Due to the current pandemic, we are limiting the number of volunteers. All volunteers will need to sign an attestation and complete a CORI check before helping on the field.

MEPTO will send information about how to sign up if you are interested in volunteering.

Important Summer Planning Underway

Following a school year unlike any other, we are excited to be planning unique and targeted experiences for the summer in support of student learning and connection. To finalize our thinking, we are seeking family interest and input. Thank you for taking a few moments to complete one survey per child: Summer 2021 Boost Programs - Initial Interest Survey

Dismissal

As you may have noticed, parent pick up in the afternoon has gotten much quicker. This is a result of eliminating double bus runs at Memorial School, more students taking the bus, and the start of our after school programs.

Please be sure you are in the pickup line by 3:10 PM. Thank you!

Reminders!

Covid Response Hotline

In order to ensure confidentiality and begin Contact Tracing as soon as possible, the District has established lines of communication if ever you need to report a positive COVID Test.

Report a student positive COVID test results by either emailing or calling the hotline below:

Medway Public Schools COVID-19 Information Hub

To provide families with the latest information and resources related to COVID-19, we have created a COVID-19 information hub, which can be accessed here, and by visiting our district’s homepage. Please visit this site for information about school/community COVID-19 health data, positive test reporting, student protocols, and local testing sites.

Meal Access for Remote Learners

As we prepare for more students to make their full return to school, remote meal distribution will now take place on Thursday mornings from 7 am to 9 am. Beginning Thursday, April 1, 2021 students who have opted for remote learning may pick-up meals at Medway Middle School on Thursdays from 7 am to 9 am at the Door # 24 on the Kelly Street entrance side of the building. A week's worth of meals will be offered during this pick-up date each week. Please see the food services website for menus. https://medwayschools.nutrislice.com/ Please contact Shawn Fallon at sfallon@medwayschools.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Dressing for Recess and Outdoor Time

Now that the weather is getting nicer, it is often cooler in the morning and there is up to 30 degrees difference by afternoon. Please be sure to dress your child in layers. Students can always take a layer off if they are hot, but the same can't be said if they are cold.

In addition, please be sure to apply sunscreen before school. Students are outside for 25 minutes and it does not take long to get a sunburn.

Finally, please be sure that students wear close toed shoes. Flip flops, sandals, and other open toed shoes are dangerous for recess and wellness classes that take place outside.

Communication

If you are not receiving email communications from the district or the schools, we are here to help. Please email parent@medwayschools.org and a team will work to ensure that you are connected.
