FOREVER ENDEAVOR
ENDEAVOR ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER -- NOVEMBER 2018
MRS. THISTLE'S THOUGHTS
Greetings!
Thank you so much to everyone who attended parent-teacher conferences in the month of October. It is wonderful when school staff and parents partner to support kids. We appreciate all that you do at home to help encourage academic and social-emotional success!
On November 2nd, the Endeavor PTO is sponsoring a Spooktacular Dance in our gymnasium. The dance will run from 6-7:30 p.m. Please plan on an adult accompanying a student for the entire event. Costumes are optional for the dance, but please ensure that no weapons or look-alike weapons are sent with the kids. The admission is a non-perishable canned good to be donated to the local food pantry. Thank you to the PTO for organizing this fun event for our school!
Have a great month!

Notes from the Office
Remember to please park in the parking stalls and NOT in the driveway.
You may also park down at the Civic Center for drop offs and pick ups.
The busses and/or any emergency vehicles need to be able to get in and out of the driveway without driving on the curbs or grass. This is a safety precaution.
COLDER WEATHER:
Colder temperatures are here to stay for a while. Please dress your child accordingly, they will be going out to recess. Extra layers are better.

Music with Ms. Janes
We in the music room are all very busy getting ready for the holiday program. The students in Mr. Hammer's class are practicing a piece called "Mountain of the Ice Dragon" on handbells, while the 3rd and 4th grade students are working on pieces with handbells and drums. Mrs. Beaulieu's class has a song called "Jingle Bell Parade", with jingle bell parts. Finally, the 1st and 2nd grade class is working on a song called "Down the Hill", it has actions that tell a story as the song is being sung. We are very excited to show you just a few of the things that we have been working on in music, since the school year started! A reminder that the holiday program is on Thursday, December 20th at 6pm in the high school auditorium. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Nursing Notes with Nurse Hon
Vision Screening
Students in kindergarten, 2nd, 4th and 6th grades will participate in vision screening. Students will have a recheck screening completed prior to the school nurse sending a referral letter for an eye exam by an eye doctor.
Referrals are sent out to parents/guardians in writing so you may take the results to your eye doctor. If your insurance does not cover an eye doctor exam, or the insurance does not cover the cost of glasses, our school nurse can connect you to resources so your child will have what s/he needs. This also applies if you do not have insurance. Please contact the school nurse to discuss the referrals, or if you need assistance with obtaining services or glasses for your child.
Anyone may refer their son/daughter for a screening by the school nurse.
Remember, children learn so much through what they see. An eye exam is the only way to know for sure if your child needs glasses or not.
Mrs. Hon may be reached at 742-4867, extension 4131.

Counselor's Corner with Ms. Brown
This year in all of the Endeavor classrooms, including art, music, library and gym, we have calm corners. Calm corners are a quiet place for students to go to if they are too sad, frustrated or too upset to think. Once at the calm corner, students can turn the sand timer over and then sit quietly for a few minutes to settle themselves.
Calm Corners provide a space for children to self regulate through the use of comfortable seating, calming sensory objects, and deep breathing exercises. When the timer is done, the goal is that the child will be able to return to the group ready to focus and learn. In the fall I spent time teaching the students how to use the space, which works hand in hand with my classroom guidance lessons on the zones of regulation!
Ask your child about the calm corners!

Something to think about . . .
“Why Can’t I Skip My Twenty Minutes of Reading Tonight?”
Let’s figure it out -- mathematically! (Source: Read Across America – NEA)
Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week.
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night….OR not at all!
Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times a week S
Students A reads 20 min. x 5 times a week = 100 minutes.
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes.
Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month
Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes each month.
Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year
Student A reads 3600 minutes in a school year.
Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.
Student A gets the equivalent of 10 additional school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of only 2 additional school days of reading practice.
By the end of 6th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits…… Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days.
Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.
Some questions to ponder……
Which student would you expect to be a better reader?
Which student would you expect to know more?
Which student would you expect to be a better writer?
Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?
Which student would you expect to be more successful in school….and in life?
