20th Anniversary of September 11th
Suggested Lessons & Resources
September 11th - 20 years later
Teaching the events and aftermath of the 20th anniversary of September 11th, 2001 can be complex, because of the emotions it may stir up in both teachers and students. Therefore, the Office of Teaching and Learning is sharing resources that you may use to observe the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 with the students we serve. The resources may be integrated across the curriculum, including Art, ESL, Social Studies and Literacy Instruction.
When working with students that are emergent bilingual, it's important to consider the historical context and a student's exposure to the events. Many of our students' families may not have been in the United States on September 11th, 2001 and this may be a students first exposure to the events of 9/11 in school.
To fully understand the context and content of the suggested mentor texts, students may benefit from additional background information through the use of the suggested resources, referring to specific visuals, pre-teaching key vocabulary, collaborating with students to create an interactive multilingual, visual word wall, providing language access tools to help facilitate class discussions and making connections between the mentor text and background information taught in class.
Students are encouraged to express themselves through class discussions, partner talk, journaling in their home language, labeling visuals, sketching, drawing and/or other forms of expressive art.
