Winter Assemblies!

Don't miss our end-of-semester Winter Assemblies! We'll hear from Principal Daubenspeck, our wonderful Music Teachers Pope and Ms. Green, and generally spread some holiday cheer.

Please note for both assemblies:

  • Students and families are welcome either together on the same Zoom or separately.
  • We will have the waiting room enabled. Please make sure you are using your real name so we can let you in!
  • Log on between 9:15-9:25am so we can get everyone in and start promptly at 9:30am.

Note from our PFC Co-Presidents

Well, by the time you read this, we will be at the symbolic halfway point of the school year. And you don’t need us to remind you about what a different school year it has been.

What we would like to do right now is just say thank you. You are all playing a role in keeping the Thornhill community together. Not to sound corny, but it really is true that the majority of success comes from just showing up. Keeping everyone on the WiFi and focused during class takes a bit of work (to put it mildly), but we know you're making things work, and we want to thank you for all that you do.

There is one person that we would like to give a shout out to in particular, and that is our wonderful newsletter editor, Jill Evans. Jill took on the newsletter duties during a year when communication among our community has been more important than ever. Every week Jill puts in the time to make sure the Thornhill newsletter is something where you can easily get the most up-to-date information about what’s going on with our school, and she does this while also dealing with submissions that come in later than they should. (We promise, Jill, our 2021 resolution is to get you these items before the deadline!) There will be a two-week break for the newsletter and Jill deserves it. Please thank her for all she does.

Happy holidays to all.

Rex Crum and Alicia Streight

Thornhill Annual Fund Update

Fundraising at Thornhill is a year-round sport! So far this school year, 38% of Thornhill students’ families have contributed to the Thornhill Annual Fund, to raise almost $139,000. Your donations are essential, as they go directly to funding PE, Librarian, four teachers’ aides, our social worker, African dance, and gardening for our student community. Forgot to donate? We still need you! Find all the info here. Thank you Thunderbirds!

Thornhill Virtual Tours

Do you have friends or neighbors interested in Thornhill for TK, kindergarten, or even a later grade? We’re offering virtual tours! During this tour, they’ll meet our principal, the TK and Kinder teachers, and a few current Thornhill families. We have 1 more tour date:

  • Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 6-7pm

Please share this registration link and point people to this page for more information.

Oakland Virtual Schools Tours

If you have an older Thunderbird and are looking to take a virtual tour of an Oakland middle or high school, OUSD is tracking virtual tours here. If you are a parent of a 5th grader, we have posted Oakland middle school virtual tours in the 5th Grade Families Konstella group.

Additionally, explore OUSD schools through their SchoolFinder. The application window for the 2021-22 school year opened on November 16, 2020 and will close on February 5, 2021. Note this window is only if you are applying to a new school at any grade. Info will come in late spring about staying at Thornhill.

OUSD Announcements

Please find OUSD announcements and events here.

Individual Class Printed Packets

If your teacher tells you that printed materials need to be picked up, they will continue to be in the same spot — on the fence near the TK trailer and the Alhambra entrance.

About the Thornhill Newsletter

The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.

Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Jill Evans, at by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.

THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VPs of Communications Erin Proudfoot & Evie Nagy, PFC Presidents Rex Crum & Alicia Streight, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
