The Season of Lent is a time for Christians to “get back to basics,” focusing on the quality of our discipleship. This means that Lent isn’t an end in itself. Rather, Lent — which comes from an Old English word meaning “springtime” — is ultimately oriented toward our celebrations of the Resurrection at Easter and our renewal of our Baptism Promises on Easter Sunday.

7pm - 8pm Distribution of Ashes without Mass. Come at any time during this hour to receive the Ashes. Please note numbers in the church at any one time can't exceed 25. Vaccine pass not required.
Please note: Ashes will also be distributed after Mass at St Matthews on Thursday 3 March (after 9.15am Mass) and at the Cathedral after 12:05pm Mass on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 March.

Silent Directed Retreats in 2022
A silent directed retreat consists of individual spiritual direction each day (roughly 20 to 30 mins). Retreatants will be directed by either Fr Carl Telford SM or Fr John Jolliffe SM. The remainder of the day is at your disposal for prayer / spiritual reading / relaxation / leisure. These retreats are fully catered and each private room has its own ensuite. Cost - $118 fee for a weekend retreat (weekday retreats also available) - payable by Credit Card. If the fee is unaffordable please email alexb@cdh.org.nz to receive a discount code. A very fruitful meeting was held on 23 Feb at St Matthews, beginning the process of consultation with the community for our submission to the Parish and Diocese. Large sheets with the 10 questions and responses are posted around the walls in the foyer at St Matthew’s. Parishioners are invited to add their comments using the felt pens supplied.
