Cedar Grove Friday Flash
February 23, 2018
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
In light of the sad and alarming school shootings recently, we wanted to remind you of the procedures that have been in place at Cedar Grove to maintain safety, which is our highest priority. All exterior doors and portables are locked throughout the school day. To gain access, visitors must ring the bell and identify themselves and state the purpose of their visit, even if the visitor is known to the office staff. Visitors must then go through the main office to pick up children, drop children off, or sign in as a volunteer and receive a visitor’s badge. Staff have been alerted to question anyone not wearing a badge and direct that person to the office.
We have practiced several drills this year, and our staff and students understand the processes for drills and have completed them well, particularly with lockdown and shelter drills. We also have an on-site emergency team, consisting of several non-classroom personnel and administrators, who have been trained on how to respond in the event of a school emergency or crisis.
If you have any questions regarding our school’s emergency responses, please contact us so that we can address your concerns. Thank you.
Wishing you a safe and wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German
BINGO Night!
BINGO Night was a huge success! Thank you to Monica Doyle and Dana Troup for all their hard work in planning and organizing this wonderful event! Also, many thanks to the staff members and PTA for assisting in this fun evening.
Hearing and Vision Screening
In accordance with the Maryland State Law students in Montgomery County Public Schools are screened for possible vision and hearing problems. Trained hearing and vision screeners will be screening students new to MCPS, students in Kindergarten and First grade and students referred by teachers because of possible signs of hearing or vision problems. The screeners will be at Cedar Grove Elementary School On March 6, 7 and April 9, 2018
You will receive a referral form to take to your child’s doctor if your child fails the screening. If your child is already under care for a hearing or vision problem, or you do not wish your child to be screened at school, please notify the school nurse in writing.
If your child wears glasses or contacts they should wear them everyday and bring them to the screening.
Radon Testing
Last December, a routine radon test was conducted. The link below will provide you with general information that was placed on our website under "What's Happening." On the web page, you will see a letter from James Song regarding the process and protocols for radon testing and the results from December. A second test was conducted in recent weeks, and those updated results will be available in the next two to three weeks. At that time, they will be published on the MCPS Radon Testing and Mitigation Program web page. As we learn more information, this will be shared with our Cedar Grove community.

Career Readiness Profiles of Success
As part of the district’s efforts to increase awareness about MCPS’ Career and Technology Education (CTE) programs and the benefits they provide, MCPS has begun chronicling the stories of MCPS graduates who are now in successful careers. MCPS is developing both written and video profiles and will continue to add to the collection throughout the year. These stories may be found on the Profiles of Success web page. MCPS has graduates who now are working in finance, law, education, information technology, and construction. They credit the education and experience they acquired in MCPS with providing them an edge in college, graduate school, internships and in their careers.
