Homeroom
Finally, we are back at school and even though it is not going to be an entire week, I'm hoping to get a good full 4 days in a row. If you are looking for something for your child to do on days we are not at school, don't forget the Tenmarks math website. Assignments are continually being updated. When I check to see students' progress, I have only noticed a handful using it consistently.
The last day of the quarter is this Friday, January 23. Grades will be posted on Thursday January 29. If you have any questions please email me. This also means Mrs. Taggart will be at another building this quarter. Mrs. Kinzeler has kindly said she would do Masterpiece Art for us. We also owe her a great big THANKS for the wonderful Winter Party she planned for us before break. It was well organized, well attended and the kids were well behaved. I know they had fun, too. Nice job!!
Scholastic book orders are due next Wednesday, January 28.
Thank you to Mrs. Flores and Mrs. Sutton for volunteering n the classroom this month.
Math
- explaining why fractions are equivalent
- comparing fractions
- adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers
- multiplying fractions
- expressing decimals as fraction with denominators of 10 and 100
- comparing two decimals to the hundreths
For this reason, we will be reviewing the rest of this week. The test will be next Tuesday unless I think students need more time to practice and I will move it back. After this test we will be reviewing Unit 1, 2 and 3 in the Progress workbook which is a perfect way to prepare for the two parts of the PARCC test students will take at the end of February. Again, Tenmarks is a great tool for students to use to practice PARCC like questions. We use it at school, but don't always have a lot of time for everyone to have as much access as they need.
Science
We have finished our Earth Science unit with a bang. Students had the opportunity to learn about quick changes on the earth's surface by studying earthquakes, volcanoes and landslides. Students received a second Focus on Curriculum booklet in order to integrate science and language arts.
The rest of this week we will be using the Chromebooks and exploring our Super Science magazines. Next week we will begin a new unit on physical science. The topic is electricity, heat and matter and our first area of focus is chemical and physical changes of matter.
