Davidson Weekly Newsletter
May 10 - May 16
We would never argue that the recent couple of months has been a positive thing. However, maybe in all of this there is a silver lining. We are all finding new ways to connect with ourselves, with our families, and our loved ones. We are realizing how important community is and investing in it.
We are deepening our appreciation for the people—the teachers, truck drivers, delivery men and women, grocery store workers and those in the food industry, nurses, garbage collectors, bus drivers, janitors, and more—who are the foundation of our society and keep us well in body and mind.
As the stay-at-home orders slowly lift and we cautiously start this new journey of whatever is going to be the new normal, remember these times and the new found appreciation and connections we have made.

June Virtual Summer School Sign-Ups are NOW Open!!
Elementary Summer School Goes Virtual for June 1-26 Session
Plans for Face-to-Face Opportunity in July
As normal plans and routines continue to shift in response to the coronavirus, NKC Schools has worked to offer summer learning opportunities even as buildings remain closed due to public health agency guidance. After reviewing feedback from parents, teachers and staff, the district’s plan includes a June Virtual Summer School session for all current kindergarten through fifth grade students as well as a July face-to-face session when our buildings are allowed to safely reopen.
June Virtual Summer School: June 1-26
The June Virtual Summer School session will extend the e-Learning environment students have become familiar with since spring break. Students who participate will experience enhanced learning and engagement opportunities that include:
· Learning activities will be provided Monday-Thursday with Friday serving as a catch-up day (similar to how Mondays have been structured this spring)
· Live daily interaction with a teacher and fellow classmates (Monday-Thursday)
· Key skill improvement in reading and math
· Enrichment through blended and project-based learning activities
Those interested in enrolling in Davidson’s Summer School Program should contact the office at 816-321-5080. You may also submit your student’s information using our 2019-2020 June Davidson Elementary Summer School Program Form. Simply complete the requested fields and click submit at the end to enroll your child.
Details on a July face-to-face session will be provided as the situation with the coronavirus continues to develop and information on when we can open schools becomes available.
Adventure Club
All students enrolled in Adventure Club during the month of June will participate in virtual summer school as well. If you have already signed your child up for Adventure Club, you will also need to enroll him/her by following the directions outlined above.
The learning never stops in NKC Schools and we are excited to expand educational opportunities for our students this summer both virtually and in-person. If you have any questions, please contact your school directly. They will be more than happy to assist you!

Nurse Stacey's Health Note
DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE!
Health experts recommend that you avoid touching your face to potentially protect you from infection. The coronavirus as well has the flu or colds are believed to spread mostly by inhaling droplets from infected persons when they cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can be airborne and you may breathe them in or touch a surface that has these viruses on them (cell phones, door handles, money/credit cards). If you then touch your eyes, nose or mouth, you could potentially become infected and may become sick or spread the disease to others.
So how many times do you touch your face? Scientists have studied this topic and various research states each of us touch our face anywhere for 16 to 30 times an hour (and we touch our face while we are sleeping).
So why do we touch our face so much? We touch our face to scratch our itchy forehead, nose or eyes. We touch our checks or chin to hold our head up. Touching our face helps reduce stress and discomfort. Touching our face has become a habit.
So how do we break that habit?
1- Have tissues close by to use to sneeze/cough.
2- Use a cool cloth or tissue to stop the itch.
3- Ask family/friends to gently remind each other when they touched their face and to wash their hands and face if they can right after touching.
4- Use a mask that is covering your nose and mouth to remind you not to touch your face. If you touch your mask, wash it as well as your hands. Take your mask off by the elastic or ties.
5- To keep your hands busy, use a stress ball or fidget spinner.
What ideas do you have to keep your hands away from your face?
Be Safe Davidson Family and you each are missed!

MEALS DISTRIBUTION
Immediately upon facing building closures due to the spread of the coronavirus, NKC Schools implemented a comprehensive plan for families to access food. Planning for any possible scenario, multiple distribution phases were outlined to continue providing this much-needed resource. As more school districts report incidents of food distribution workers contracting COVID-19, NKC Schools collaborated with the Clay County Health Department to determine the right time to shift to Phase 2 of our plan. The decision has been made that on Monday, April 13, district buses will no longer be used to deliver meals to stops throughout our community. Food distribution will now be increased from four to 12 school sites located throughout our attendance area. Local health officials advise this change in our service model will help slow the spread of the coronavirus. NKC Schools remains steadfast in our resolve to provide food to those in need.
The following sites are designated as “grab-n-go” food pick up locations every Monday through Friday between 10 a.m.–1 p.m. This is an extension of the previous timeframe. No changes will be made to food distribution for families with unique needs and extenuating circumstances. Should you have need for such an accommodation, please contact your school’s School Community Resource Specialist. Limited delivery efforts will continue in high need areas, as well.

Technology Support During E-Learning
As students engage in e-Learning experiences while our school buildings are closed, we know additional support may be needed. The NKC Schools Help Desk supports student learning year-round, and will continue to do so during this period. Staff members will be available to answer questions and provide assistance remotely to all staff and students via email at helpdesk@nkcschools.org, web chat, or phone at 816-321-HELP. Parents who may need assistance are welcome to use the chat or phone number as well. The email support is only for valid district email addresses.
The NKC Schools Technology department will also offer device support in person at the same times and locations as meal pick up services at the feeder pattern high schools. This will provide an opportunity for families to get assistance with student devices, including iPads and Macs. This will also be the location where you will drop-off or pick up devices for repair. Simply drive up at the front entrance of your feeder pattern high school between 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. and let a staff member know that you are looking for assistance with technology.
