Parent Survey Now Open!
Once you open the online survey, be sure to use "Kane" as the county for our school, and you DO NOT need to enter an email address.
Please help us gather feedback about your experiences at Coleman by completing the survey online here, or completing the paper surveys to be sent home in early December.
The deadline to complete the survey is January 18. We appreciate your help!
School Attendance is Important
- students who arrive to school between 8:30 and 8:35 go directly to classrooms and are marked tardy by their teacher rather than waiting in the office for a pass;
- students who are tardy and arrive after 8:35 receive a "welcome pass" from the office before going to class;
- monitor attendance by classroom and recognize those rooms where students are ON TIME and STAY ALL DAY. These classrooms then add a letter to the phrase "Perfect Attendance." Once they spell the words completely, the class chooses an incentive, and re-starts the process.
So far this year, we have seen an increase in our attendance percentage over last year, but we also know that traditionally in December, many families leave well before the scheduled break at the end of the month and then extend the break in January. Please remember that each day your child is not in class they miss not only instructional time, but working in groups and projects, work in their fine arts and physical education classes, checking out books from the library, etc. In addition, research suggests that just missing TWO DAYS of school each month can lead to a drop in learning, especially during the early years (K-2nd grade) and can severly affect reading progress.
Beginning after winter break we will implement Part 2 of our attendance plan:
- expect a personal phone call from the school when your child is absent from school to check in and find out how we can help support improved school attendance;
- when your child is tardy after 8:35, a parent/guardian will need to sign them in at the office.
- an attendance "tally board" will be posted in the main hallway for parents/staff/students to keep track of our school-wide and grade level attendance progress.
If you have any questions or suggestions about school attendance, please don't hesitate to contact us at the school. School attedance matters!

Coleman PBIS Update
Coleman School continues to implement our PBIS program (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) with our “Cougar Way” behavior expectations:
- We are RESPONSIBLE
- We are RESPECTFUL
- We are SAFE
Remember that PBIS focuses on teaching students expected behaviors at key
places in a school (classroom, cafeteria, playground, bathrooms, etc) and teachers
actually demonstrate these behaviors with the students. It also brings a common language
around behavior to the whole school, from administration, to teachers, support staff and,
of course, students. As part of PBIS, we keep tabs on where negative behavior is
happening and when. This helps us re-focus and re-teach expected behaviors. To this end,
we continue to use an Office Referral Form for all minor and major behavior. (You may see
one of these come home with your child if they engage in certain behaviors. We ask that
you discuss it with you child, sign it and return to your child’s teacher.) Many of the minor
behaviors previously just handled verbally in the classroom are now also being recorded on these forms as part of our data collection of behaviors.
In addition, positive behaviors are recognized with PAWS tickets distributed by teachers and staff, that can then be redeemed for prizes and incentives developed by the teachers and their students.
If you would like to learn more about our district use of PBIS, check the link here.
