The Method
The best method of striking it rich through the 19th century to today has been oil. Rockefeller monopolized the industry, amassing a huge amout of money from his expedentures. Some others have also made it to the top by investing in oil, such as Henry Huttleston Rogers, one of Rockefeller's partners. Make sure to bribe, buy, and trade with other conglomerates as you will have to create a tight control of the market so that you can reap all the rewards for yourself.
If you're not interested in oil, being an entrepreneur of emerging markets, such as railroads (Vanderbilt), steel (Carnegie), cars (Ford) : all these provided ample amount of money - as long as you took advantage and took all of the profits for yourself.
