Launching our New Multiplication & Division Unit
The Big Dinner: Project Based Learning
We have launched our third math unit this year, The Big Dinner. The focus is the development of multiplication, including automatizing the facts, using the ratio table and developing the distributive property with larger numbers. The context for this unit is preparing for a big turkey dinner. The story context sets the stage for a series of investigations. First they begin to investigate the cost of 24lb turkey, selling for 1.25lb. As we progress students develop t-charts or ratio tables for the grocer that lists prices of the trimming, carrots, potatoes, apples. And finally the unit culminates with an investigation on how long the turkey should cook at fifteen minutes per pound.
They should all be fully prepared for Thanksgiving at the end of the month:)
