HEALTHY FUTURES
Let’s Get Physical!
Healthy Futures Fall Challenge is happening in September, October and November! Help your child learn more about a healthy lifestyle and get more active. Complete the calendar for each month indicating the minutes of physical activity each day. Kids need only 60 minutes of exercise for 15 days of the month to earn a small prize and chances for larger prizes. Every day, students have 30 minutes of activity if they go outside to play at recess. These minutes along with the 45 minutes of PE count for the healthy futures calendars as well. Our school may also earn extra prizes by having outstanding numbers of students participating in the program. One year our school earned a visit from the Eskimo Ninja, Nick Hansen, because of the number of Big Lake Elementary students participating in the program. Join us in earning exciting prizes for our students and school! The September Calendar is attached to this email. Your child may also pick up an additional calendar from their teacher or the Healthy Futures Display!

LIBRARY NOOK
This week the 5th graders are finishing up their rock project based on the book Only One You by Linda Krantz. They will be placed out front by the entrance to the school to brighten up our entry!
Grades 2nd-5th also started the digital citizenship unit discussing everything from being responsible, how our actions have a ripple effect, and having a healthy balance of media in our lives. These lessons are from Common Sense Media, found in our student links on the website. This link is a great resource for parents who want reviews of appropriate movies, books, etc.
1st grade will be bringing their books home starting this week! Please review book care and find a safe place for your children to keep their books safe at home.
Kindergarten is learning to take care of books and use shelf markers
Congratulations to the basket winners from Open House last night! All winners have been contacted.
TUTORING/HOMEWORK CLUB
We still have room in our tutoring/homework club. Each session can hold a maximum of 32 students. These clubs are Monday-Thursday. The AM session is from 8:15-9:00 am and the PM session is from 4:00-4:45 pm. Both Tutoring/Homework Club sessions will be cancelled on days with before school and evening events so that staff are able to help with those events. A list of cancelled dates has been attached to the permission slip.
This is a great opportunity for your child to receive some extra help with homework assignments and work on reading and math skills using the Lexia Core5, Moby Math and Prodigy programs.
Please call Mrs. Lovelace at 892-9745 to have a permission slip sent home with your child.

VISION SCREENING
The Lions Club will be completing a vision screening at Big Lake Elementary Monday, September 30, 2019 for Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students. A permission slip must be signed and returned to school in order to participate. Also, if your student is in a different grade but you would like to have their vision screened please email the nurse rachel.lund@matsuk12.us.
LICE
There have been cases of head lice reported in your child’s school. Head lice can happen to anyone. It is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty. Please check your child at home for head lice, even if your child is lice free at this time please recheck throughout the month.
- Nits (lice eggs) are tiny, white, pearly eggs that attach themselves to the hair shaft close to the scalp. They do not flick off or move like dry skin. Live lice are small black bugs. If you have any questions on how to perform a lice check please contact the nurse 907-892-9705.
- Step 1 If you find eggs try and detect where your child encountered the lice. Report to the nurse your child's name and teacher.
- Even though they do not jump or fly, they can spread from one student to another by sharing combs, brushes, clothing, hats and in bedding.
- Step 2 There are many lice treatment shampoos on the market as well as other mechanical and manual methods of controlling the lice. All lice shampoos are not created equal. Medicated lice shampoo is the only approved method to kill lice. One treatment is not enough. Please follow the directions on the medicated shampoo you purchase to prevent re-infestation.
- Step 3 Bed linens and clothing including hats, coats, etc must be washed the same day as the first shampoo. Items that can not be laundered can be placed in a plastic trash bag and stored for 2 weeks in the garage.
- Combs and hairbrushes, etc. must be boiled and/or cleaned in hot soapy water and left to soak overnight. Ponytail holders, bows, barrettes should be bagged for 2 weeks. Vacuum out drawers where items area kept.
- Step 4 Daily inspection of your child’s head after treatment is important for 2-3 weeks following treatment. All household members and other close contacts should be checked and treated at same time.
WINTER GEAR
Big Lake has winter gear available to families in need. Please contact the nurse.
CROSS WALK AND SPEED LIMIT
The speed limit in our school parking lot is maximum 5 MPH. Please drive slowly and cautiously as students may be walking to and from parked vehicles.
Please use the cross walk and follow the directions of our crossing guards when walking to and from the school from your parked vehicle. We wish to keep parents and students safe.
Thank you
