New Bridge ~ Ensuring all students achieve academic excellence through relevant learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math!

To our New Bridge Family,

Happy New Year to all of you! I truly hope you've had a fabulous holiday with your families. Before we left for break, we were hard at work with academics, attendance, and developing our social skills. We focused on kindness during the month of December along with ways to problem solve in our relationships with others. Teachers completed a "data dive" with our second set of interim tests and prepared to begin our next block of instruction. We now welcome you all back as we wind up our 2nd quarter and push into our 3rd quarter of learning and achievement for our Knights. We have had a full semester and are on track for achieving many of our goals for this year. I invite you to continue to support your students in their home reading, home STEM challenges, Family STEM days, and daily work. Motivating our students with highly engaging learning experiences is our priority at New Bridge while ensuring that foundational skills are mastered. As always, we recognize that our partnership with you in your child's learning is critical to their success. I want to make a special plea to have your child participate in the 2019 STEM & Science Fair, which takes the place of our monthly Family days and home STEM challenge for the month of January. Thanks so much for your continued support and efforts to make New Bridge the best school ever! I wish I could capture all the good going on each day at New Bridge to share with you, but please enjoy just a few of these highlights from the past few months.

Project Based Learning at New Bridge

Students and teachers at New Bridge are regularly involved in Project Based Learning (PBL). What is that? It is "a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge." Our teachers and administrators are continuing their learning by attending professional development that will help them strengthen their abilities to continue to offer these kinds of learning experiences for our Knights. Your students are hopefully talking with you about their challenges and problems they are solving at school. Enjoy a few snapshots here of some of the "problem solving" and celebrations that have occurred.

Much to Be Thankful For!

Thank you to our fabulous lunch staff for putting on our annual 6th Grade Thanksgiving Feast. The 6th grade students came in their best dress and enjoyed a fun afternoon with their teachers & other staff. We have the best 6th grade ever!

Blues in the Schools - 3rd Grade

Blues in the Schools offers the opportunity for students of all ages to engage in multidisciplinary, whole-language learning using the study of music, math, language arts, history, anthropology, and sociology in a hands-on approach celebrating creative self-expression. By bringing the blues genre into the classroom, students are exposed to these traditional subjects, while breaking down racial barriers and opening dialogue about cultural diversity. Thank you Mr. Palmer for applying for this grant that gave our students this fabulous experience. We hope our parents have enjoyed the extra harmonica music in their homes! :)

Veteran's Day Thank You!

Thank you Jessica Smith, teachers, and students for sharing your time and gratitude with our local veterans. They enjoyed a few moments of honor at New Bridge and received our own 3-D printed medals of honor, designed and produced by our students and STEM lab.

New Bridge Tour

Several architects and others invested in the design of schools like New Bridge toured our school in December. Here, a 4th grade student shows them her Rube Goldberg design and her team's preparation for the competition next month at Weber State! Below, Mrs. Namovicz’s first graders are sharing their coding projects with our guests.

5th Grade Rocks JA City

Big picture

Fifth grade rocked JA (Junior Achievement) City this year! They prepared by learning about city government, running their own campaigns for offices, and preparing to run their "business" at BizTown (Discovery Gateway). During their day at JA BizTown, students worked as employees in various businesses facilitated by volunteer educators and business professionals. They were “paid” for their labor and they managed personal and business checking accounts. Throughout the day they learned first-hand about time and money management as they worked, banked, and shopped as consumers. They represented New Bridge well! We're grateful for the 5th grade teachers and all the parents that supported our students.

Thank you Colonel Alford

Dec 7, 1941

Sixth grade had a special visit from Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth J Alford with the US Air Force. He taught the students about the events of the day and brought in artifacts and newspapers from Dec. 7, 1941. At the end of the presentation, he gave each student a dime to help them remember FDR and his role in Pearl Harbor and the war. Students were also given a pep talk about overcoming hardships and disabilities in reference to FDR having polio and still managing the incredible task of being president.

Parent STEM Workshops!

Thanks to all the parents who joined us for our 2nd quarterly Parent STEM training and to Jill Minnich and Shawnee Robinson for teaching them. Parents enjoyed a fun class on learning how to code. Our next parent workshop is Feb 12, 10:00, designing and building an engineering structure.Thank you Ms. Robinson, our STEM coach, for preparing this awesome opportunity for our parents!

December Attendance Challenge

We set a challenge for all our students and staff to be at school every day on time during December, especially for the last week of school before our break. Each day we celebrated how being at school helps create brighter futures for all of us and then completed the week with a Christmas Carol Sing-along and hot chocolate on the playground from our PTA. We wore college shirts, our shades because school is cool, had a crazy hair day (Crazy hair? We don't care; we're going to school anyways!) and a Holiday pajama day. Thanks for participating in our challenge and helping us by getting students to school on time every day! Thanks also to our 6th grade peer leaders for helping us with our sing-along!
