STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Written by Ms. Shook- When I asked for help in providing information for one of her classmates who lost her belongings in a recent fire, Abby, stepped up and provided all her notes, even chapter reading so that her classmate did not have to further stress about redoing all her work for AP World. Abby could have just given me the most recent notes but when she found out why I asked her, she immediately handed me her binder and said take it all.

SILENT NO MORE
COMBINED WINTER CONCERT
MHSP WHITE SHIRT CEREMONY
During this ceremony each senior is recognized by the program faculty. They wear the specially designed white shirts gifted to honor their senior standing and recognize their achievement to this point. Once the recognition is completed, they recite the student Hippocratic Oath for the first time. It is a milestone all program students look forward to attaining. One student is selected by the program teachers for the prestigious "Spirt of the Oath" award. This year's recipient is Isabella Sadr. The keynote speaker each year is the recipient from last year's graduating class.
This yearly tradition was modeled after the White Coat Ceremony each medical student experiences as they start medical school. During the medical student white coat ceremony, professors help the students don the white coat, a symbol and honor of the medical profession. The recitation of the Hippocratic Oath takes place as medical students begin their four-year journey of rigorous learning.

ARP/ESSER
ARP/ESSER stands for the American Rescue Plan Act Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds. This federal money is to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools and address the impacts of COVID-19 on students' academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.
In the most recent distribution, Norfolk was awarded $113,301,572.62 in ESSER III funds.
Norfolk Public Schools seeks community engagement and feedback throughout the year on how to use these ARP ESSER III Funds most effectively to support our students. NPS has used this funding to expand summer school options, provide free one-to-one online tutoring, purchase school supplies and personal protective equipment, implement software to support online learning, and purchase water filling stations scheduled for installation in schools.
Read the full plan here. We want to hear what you think as well as your ideas for additional supports. Contact us at 757-628-3459 or tellus@npsk12.com.
FEDERAL IMPACT AID SURVEY
The annual Federal Impact Aid Survey went home last week. This very important document allows Norfolk Public Schools to qualify for federal funding to support public education. The Impact Aid program was designed to assist school districts that have lost property tax revenue due to the presence of tax-exempt Federal property, or experienced increased expenditures due to the enrollment of federally connected children. It partially compensates the school division for the education of children whose parent/guardians meet the following criteria:
· Military (US and Foreign) including National Guards and Reservists on active duty
· Employed on federal property
· Reside on federal property (military base housing)
· Reside in publicly-owned housing
Funds are considered general aid to school divisions and can be used for any purpose in accordance with local and state requirements to support:
· Salaries of teachers and aides
· Textbooks
· Computers and other equipment
· Instructional materials
· After school programs
· Remedial tutoring
· Special enrichment programs
Please make sure your student returns the survey to their teacher. They can also drop it off at the main office or at guidance.
