TCU Research Opportunity for students
TCU has an outstanding research opportunity for Secondary students: the Research Apprentices Program. Students are paired with TCU professors who provide research opportunities concerning topics of interest to the student.
These research opportunities have led to paid and unpaid internships for BISD students, and the first two BISD Seniors who participated in this program graduated just this year.
Both cited the TCU program on their student resumes. One received $160,000 in scholarships and is continuing his research at university, and the other received $175,000 in scholarships and is on a full ride at university. These research opportunities make learning more relevant to our students and immerse them in college activities at an early age.
It also helps them decide what career choice may be of most interest to them. At this writing, we have middle and high school students participating in the Research Apprentices Program, and hope your students may join them!

More AFLs
In order to better understand and learn whether students are grasping the lesson, practice frequency. Check for understanding at least three times a lesson, minimum.
More Examples of AFLs:
One-Minute Paper*
During last few minutes of class period, ask students to use a half-sheet of paper and write “Most important thing I learned today and what I understood least.”
Review before next class meeting and use to clarify, correct, or elaborate.
Muddiest Point*
Similar to One-Minute Paper but only ask students to describe what they didn’t understand and what they think might help.
Same as One-Minute Paper. If many had the same problem, try another approach.
Chain Notes*
Pass around a large envelope with a question about the class content. Each student writes a short answer, puts it in the envelope, and passes it on.
Sort answers by type of answer. At next class meeting, use to discuss ways of understanding.
