Specials' Corner
PE with Coach Freeman
In PE, we will be working on gross motor skills such as jumping, hopping, skipping, and throwing this month. We also will have an introduction to health and nutrition. GO, SLOW, and WHOA foods. The discussion will begin with why drinking water, eating fruits, and eating vegetables (GO foods) has a good effect on the body and why eating junk food (Whoa foods) hurts the body. Bodies do not need to be perfect they just need to be healthy!
Art with Mrs. Lovelace:
This September will be full of new and exciting things in Art. We will introduce new fine motor exercises to help strengthen our hands and our fingers and continue to work on our Art room rules and procedures. We will learn how to use liquid glue as we make our 3D paper sculptures, learn the proper way to hold scissors, and work with tempera paint as we create original pieces of artwork inspired by the work of Henri Matisse. We will learn about Monsier Mattise including studying his life and legacy while exploring some of his most famous pieces.
Music with Mrs. Mauldin:
In Music we will begin working on steady beat during the month of September. We will learn how we hear music and beats in everyday things like a clock, basketball, dripping faucet, etc. The kids will begin playing instruments and learning how to keep a steady beat with rhythm sticks. I’m very excited to have your kiddos in music this year!
Library with Mrs. Churchill & Mrs. Cunningham:
In the library this month, we will be learning all about library manners. This involves the correct way to treat the library AND the library books. We will also be discovering the parts of a book, which include the front cover, back cover, spine and title page. During this time, we will be distinguishing between the author and illustrator of a book as well. There’s lots to learn in the library!!

Counselor's Corner
In September the school counselors will be working on recognizing our feelings. Just like adult’s children experience many emotions. They get frustrated, excited, nervous, sad, jealous, frightened, worried, angry and embarrassed. However young kids usually don’t have the vocabulary to talk about how they are feeling. Instead they communicate their feelings in other ways. Kids can express their feelings through facial expressions, through their body, their behavior and play. From the moment kids are born, they start learning the emotional skills they need to identify, express and manage their feelings. They learn how to do this through their social interactions and relationships with important people in their lives such as parents, grandparents and care givers. Being a parent means you’ve got a really important role to play in helping kids understand their feelings and behaviors.
- Behind every behavior is a feeling - Try to understand the meaning and feeling behind your child’s behavior. You can help your child find other ways to express that feeling once you know what is driving the behavior.
- Name the feeling - Help your child name their feelings by giving them a label. Naming feelings is the first step in helping kids learn to identify them. It allows your child to develop an emotional vocabulary so they can talk about their feelings.
- Identify feelings in others – Provide lots of opportunities to identify feelings in others. You might ask your child to reflect on what someone else may be feeling. Cartoons or picture books are a great way discuss feelings and helps kids learn how to recognize other people’s feelings through facial expressions.
- Be a role model - Kids learn about feelings and how to express them appropriately by watching others. Show your child how you’re feeling about different situations and how you deal with those feelings.
Mark your calendars!
