Among the Week #7 headlines at HHS:
Special Olympics has renewed our status as a Unified Champion School. As noted on the certificate, this is the mark of a school that “emphasizes acceptances, respect and human dignity for all students.”
We marked National Teen Driver Safety Week by welcoming the MAPFRE Foundation's “Look Both Ways” interactive road safety program to campus, enabling sophomores to test their safe driving ability with the interactive React Challenge. This is the mark of a school that works to guard the physical safety of its students.
At its first meeting of the year, the HHS School Council began the work of implementing our annual School Improvement Plan, which includes the following goals:
Promote civic engagement for HHS students.
Expand community service opportunities for HHS students.
Explore the creation of “Pathways” for HHS students.
Bolster the school’s commitment to and practice of “Environmental Stewardship” as a Core Value.
Build community and strengthen school culture in ways that promote a genuine “sense of belonging” for all members.
The Council also elected a student co-chair (Jasper Lee ‘23) for the first time in school history! This is the mark of a school that empowers student leadership.
Students in our “Breathe Out” club, with guidance from our adjustment counselors, will deliver a series of self-care activities throughout the day today; the semi-annual event encourages us to get outdoors, and it helps us to focus on all-important topics of mental health. This is the mark of a school that cares about the wellness of its students and staff.
Looking ahead…
The Unified Basketball team will play its first home game of the season this afternoon at 3:30 PM. Come on out for an exciting game and a very special banner-raising ceremony!
Thanks to our great community partners at Hingham CARES, HHS students can enjoy a free yoga class at Open Doors Yoga Studios tonight. A healthy alternative to partying, the co-ed class will focus on mindfulness and stress reduction. And on top of all that, the event will include a raffle and free snacks from Clandestine Kitchen!
Members of the HHS crew team will join peers from around the world at the Head of the Charles regatta on Sunday morning.
HHS will welcome 18 French students (sophomores and juniors) for an exchange that begins on Thursday 10/27 and continues through Saturday, November 5th.
With Halloween fast approaching, we hope students will remember the important distinction between culture and costume. Sometimes costumes that rely on harmful stereotypes can cause pain to others. In keeping with our school’s emphasis on inclusiveness and respect, please be sure to avoid costumes that exhibit cultural appropriation or perpetuate stereotypes of historically marginalized peoples.
Finally, a friendly reminder to parents who wish to contact a child during the school day. Please keep in mind that students should not be sending or receiving text messages during class. In case of an emergency, parents should call the main office.
The daily notices and full school calendar can always be viewed on the HHS website. Look for details on the website and in our weekly PTO newsletter.
Have a great weekend!
