Emily Carr
October 2018
Message from Administration
September was certainly an exciting month at Emily Carr P.S. We would like to thank all who joined us for our Newcomer Welcome, Volunteer Meeting, and School Council. Our Annual Open House and BBQ was very well attended. It was great to see students show their families around the school and share their learning.
We want to thank Mrs. Munro, Mrs. MacDougall and all the student volunteers for making our Annual Terry Fox Walk such a huge success!
As we roll into October, we would like to remind families that Walking and/or Wheeling to school is always a great option. October is International Walk to School month so once again Emily Carr P.S. will be celebrating this month with music and stickers for all of our walkers and wheelers on Wednesday, October 3rd. Please come out and enjoy the celebration. Let's commit to keeping our kids active by walking to school everyday!
Parking Lot Reminders
For those parents that are using the parking lot, we would like to extend a friendly reminder to follow the rules of the road. If you need to park, then please use the designated parking spots. There are 4 accessible parking spots that require an Accessible Parking Permit. It is important to follow the painted arrows to help with the safe and orderly flow of traffic. By-law Officers regularly patrol the front loop. This loop is a fire loop and parking in the loop even for a moment could result in a hefty ticket. We also want to stress the importance of remembering that the parking lot is an extension of the school, and there are many students walking in/crossing the parking lot. Together we want to continue to work to keep Emily Carr a safe and happy community. Thank you for your support!
Cross Walk Concerns
We had a visit from the Town of Oakville Senior Crossing Guard Coordinator. She expressed serious concerns about families following the direction of our neighbourhood Crossing Guards whether they be walking or driving. Specifically, at the intersection of Postmaster and Pine Glen, vehicles have been seen driving through the Crossing Guard's stop sign while children are crossing. The Town of Oakville has shared this safety concern with Halton Regional Police.
We are asking for your support to help keep children and adults safe in the community. Please follow the direction of the Crossing Guards at intersections. They are trained and here to support the safe transportation of families to and from school. Staff will also review safety at intersections in the community with students.
Crossing Guards are valued members of our community, and we can always show our appreciation with a smile, wave, or a "thank you" to let them know they are appreciated.
Thank you for your support.
New Absence/Late Arrival Reporting System
Parents/guardians will now have the option to receive app notifications and text messages in addition to emails and/or phone calls from schools and the HDSB.
All families must register for SchoolMessenger to report student absences online, and set communication preferences for receiving messages from your child's school and the HDSB. You can register for SchoolMessenger through the HDSB Mobile App or the SchoolMessenger website. https://go.schoolmessenger.ca/#/home
Stay Informed
EC families are encouraged to keep informed with all the happenings at Emily Carr P.S. through our Twitter account @EmilyCarrHDSB and our school website.
Emily Carr's Terry Fox Run
Thank you for supporting our school's fundraising effort for The Terry Fox School Run.
In 1981, Terry said, "Even if I don't finish, we need others to continue. It's got to keep going without me." Thanks to your generosity, cancer research in Canada continues to forge discoveries that Terry could have only dreamed about.
Every day we are moving closer to his inspiring dream: a world free of cancer.
This year the Emily Carr community raised approximately $5300.00.
We truly appreciate your donation.
International Walk to School Day - October 3rd
Hello Parents!
October is the start of Walk to School month! From October 1st -5th, it is Walk To School Week. Start the day off right by getting up and using active transportation to get to your desired destination. Especially on October 3rd, which is iWalk/iWheel day, not only is this beneficial for the children but for you as well!
Check out www.everymetrecounts.ca, which has a trip counter to log the metres walked to school (or the bus) and a walk and roll map illustrating walk/bike times from the school.
Even when the month of October is over, active transportation is a great way to travel to and from school or anywhere.
Lets make walking to school an adventure with Walk to School month!
Cross Country Runners!
CONGRATULATIONS to all of our cross country runners this year. Our team was over 190 strong and our biggest group in our school's history! Students worked extremely hard over the last month training for their big race day. Although our race day was filled with rain, mud and less than ideal conditions, it was also a day with wonderful memories of exemplary sportsmanship, dedication, perseverance and fun!
A huge thanks to our 42 Grade 8 volunteers that helped run our team this year and those that joined us on a rainy day to support us. Without their dedication and hard work, we wouldn't have gotten through the season.
We had many staff offer their help with supervision of practices and were amazing during our race day. Thanks to our parent volunteers who offered their time and attended the meet so we were sure to have enough adults on hand.
It takes a village to run such a big team!
GO THUNDERBIRDS!

Prevalent Medical Conditions
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Education released Policy Program Memorandum 161: Supporting Students with Prevalent Medical Conditions. School Boards across Ontario are expected to implement PPM 161 by September 2018. As a result, the HDSB has updated several Administrative Procedures to better support students who have Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders. With the revised HDSB procedures, students who have any of the listed prevalent medical conditions, must have a Plan of Care in place. Furthermore, the Plan of Care must be co-created by the student, parent and school staff.
If your child has a prevalent medical condition, please access the new Plan of Care documents at the hyperlinks below

October 2 - Simchat Torah -Judaism
The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. This holiday is filled with joy, where Jewish people celebrate the conclusion—and restart—of the annual Torah-reading cycle.
October 2 - United Nations
The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. According to General Assembly resolution of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness". The resolution reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".
October 8 - Thanksgiving - Canada
Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. It is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest and other fortunes in the past year. Many people have a day off work on the second Monday of October. They often use the three-day Thanksgiving weekend to visit family or friends who live far away, or to receive them in their own homes. Many people also prepare a special meal to eat at some point during the long weekend. Traditionally, this included roast turkey and seasonal produce, such as pumpkin, corn ears and pecan nuts. Most importantly it is a time to give thanks and be together.
October 9-17 - Sharad Navratri - Hinduism
Navratri is a nine days festival dedicated to Goddess Durga. Navratri is a Sanskrit word which literally means nine nights. During these nine nights and ten days, Goddess Durga is worshipped in 9 different forms, known as Navdurga. Navratri is celebrated in most Indian states. However Navratri is very popular festival in the western states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and the southern state of Karnataka.

October 11 - World Sight Day - United Nations
World Sight Day is the most important advocacy and communications event on the eye health calendar. It is a great time to engage with the world around us – a patient’s family, those who seldom get an eye exam, diabetics. World Sight Day 2018 will be on 11 October 2018. This year’s call to action: Eye Care Everywhere
We know now that 1.2 billion people don’t have access to glasses. Over 3 out of 4 of the world’s vision impaired are avoidably so. Everyone should have access to care for their eyes.
October 13- Ayathrem Gahambar (Fasli Calendar) - Zoroastrian
Ayathrem Gahanbar ('bringing home (the herds)'), originally celebrated at the end of autumn. Zoroastrianism has numerous festivals and holy days, all of which are bound to the Zoroastrian calendar. This festival is celebrated over five days.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Call to Action by Father Joseph Wresinski — which inspired the observance of October 17 as the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty — and the recognition by the United Nations of the day as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
October 24 - Vap Poya Day/Pavarana Day - Buddhism
Poya Day is not a single day but a name for any holiday in Sri Lanka that is held to mark a full moon. This day also marks the conclusion of the Rains retreat (Vassa). In the following month, the kathina ceremony is held, during which the laity gather to make formal offerings of robe cloth and other requisites to the Sangha.
October 28 - Karva Chauth
Karva Chauth / Karwa Chauth, one of many Hindu festivals, is a fasting ritual observed by all married Hindu women who seek the longevity, prosperity and well-being of their husbands. This festival is very popular amongst married Hindu women in the western and northern parts of India, primarily in Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh.
October 31 - Halloween - Canada
Many people around the world celebrate Halloween, which occurs annually on October 31. It is the day before All Saints’ Day, and is also sometimes called All Hallows’ Eve and Hallowmas Eve. Costume parties are often held at people’s homes and many children go trick-or-treating to neighbourhood homes in the evening to collect candy or treats. Schools celebrate Halloween by hosting costume parades. Many homes are decorated to fit the Halloween theme during this time with jack-o-lanterns, spiders and cobwebs, bats and black cats. Happy Halloween!
