Introduction

Charlie Chaplin is, and always will be a film legend. He has produced/starred in over 50 movies, and has brought much joy to many Americans. He is most popular for his silent films and iconic character, The Little Tramp. Like most film stars, not many people knew about his dark past or personal life. This website will be about his life, the good and the bad.

Childhood

Charlie had a very rough childhood. He was born April 16, 1889, in London. He had a brother named Sydney, and two parents that were in the music/acting business. Charlie's dad left them shortly after he was born, and later died when Charlie was 12. Charlie's mothers voice started failing soon after his father left. His family became very poor as a result of that. Hannah (his mother) was very depressed and become insane. She had to be commited to an asylum for the insane. She was in and out of there, but finally stayed in one for 7 years, which forced the two boys to live a life on the streets. From there on, Sydney got acting gigs for him and Charlie to make money. In 1913, Charlie left his old life and childhood behind and traveled to Los Angeles.

Career

At the age of 24, Charlie came to the United States from London. He filmed his first movie, "A Days Pleasure" there. Soon after, his iconic character, The Little Tramp, was born. In 1921, Chaplin's first movie, "The Kid" came out, which boosted his career. He directed, wrote and starred in the film himself. He had many iconic movies, including "The Kid" , " A Woman of Paris", "The Circus", "City Lights", "The Great Dictator", "A king in New York" and lastly, "A Countess in Hong Kong"

Personal Life

In 1918, he married Mildred Harris, the first of many wives. However, it was a failed marriage, which only lasted two years. In 1924, Chaplin got his co-star, Lita Grey, pregnant and has to rush into a marriage. They had two children together, Charles Chaplin Jr., and Sydney Chaplin. In 1928, his mother died and Lita Grey divorced him.

In 1936, Charlie got married again, to Paulette Goddard. 6 years later, in 1942 they got divorced. This is when he marries an 18 year old, (Oona O Neill) He has eight children with her. Geraldine, Michael, Josephine, Victoria, Eugene, Jane, Annette, and Christopher. Most of the Chaplin children grew up to be actors and actresses. If they didn't, then they were still in the industry. Many of the Chaplin children had roles in their father's movies.

Conclusion

So obviously Charlie Chaplin has accomplished a lot in his life. He has left a legacy, and has inspired many film makers. He explored many genres and places of film, before anyone else. I think it would only be appropriate to put this quote by him. "In the end, everything is a gag"
